Lack of power vs. abundance of power

In the article, Johnson depicts the girls' lack of power against U.S. Radium in their court hearing. He stated that many of the lawyers Grace approached were unwilling to risk their career for a "poor working girl". On the other hand, U.S. Radium was a large company that could afford clever lawyers to ensure they win the hearing.

Influence of the Public

It wasn't until the public stepped in to help the girls that the hearing would be held before the girls deaths. The power seemed to flip between the two when U.S. Radium's customers rose against them.

Unequal power among women.

In both the article and the poem, it seems that the lack of power for women is prevalent. Marie Curie perhaps denied her wounds to fulfill her duty as a scientist or because she lacked the respect from higher authorities to listen to her. This could also be the reason the workers at U.S. Radium were unaware of the risks of dealing with radium.

Paradox

On the last line of the poem, Rich includes this paradoxical statement to reveal the power of the unknown. Marie Curie's power was her willingness and devotion to learn and ultimately discover the unknown. However, ironically the unknown power of the very substance she was researching, or her denial of it in order to continue research, inevitably killed her in the end. In short, the substance that gave her mental power, took away her physical power to live.

On line 14, Rich uses irony to show how even though Marie Curie was a famous woman, she was still forced to deny the radiation in her body because she was a woman. One would think that because she was famous people would listen to her and respect her ideas but because she was a woman in the late 1800's, she was forced to think she was wrong.
