Hello fellow UWP 007Y 009 classmates! My name is Samantha and I am a first year Design major.

1. My relationship with reading is extremely great right now. I really love reading and I have enjoyed it since I was a child. This year, I made a resolution to read fifty books a year, or roughly one book a week. So far, I have been able to keep up! My favorite genres are realistic fiction and memoirs, but I also enjoy a good non-fiction book here and there. Some of my favorite books that I have read this year are Know My Name by Channel Miller, Fifty Words for Rain by Asha Lemmie, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami, Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner, and The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk. I love reading physical books, but I will also occasionally use my Kindle because I appreciate the convenience of borrowing e-books from the library (they instantly deliver). As far as tools go, I like to keep a journal and a pen nearby, so that I can make note of which words I don’t know. If I have time, I will go back and study them. I also like to keep track of which books I have read through an application called Notion. I like to write short summaries about books once I finish them, and I also give them a rating.

2. I have a positive relationship with writing as well, although I don’t engage with writing quite as often in my spare time. I like to journal in the evening, usually before bed, and I will either respond to a prompt, or just write a stream of consciousness. It is a really great way to de-stress and unload everything that happened throughout the day. I try to journal every day, but if I don’t have time, it’s no biggie. Other than that, I also enjoy composing emails. (I know, it’s a bit strange). I use email to check in and catch up with people who I haven’t spoken to in a while, and I prefer it over texting when it comes to deeper conversations that require more detail. My favorite writing tools of all time are gel ballpoint pens! I love using different colors depending on my mood, and they write so smoothly! Honorable mention goes to the Muji pens. I also prefer to journal on dotted paper as opposed to lined paper because it looks much cleaner. If I am composing emails, I will use my laptop, and if I am on the go, I will use my phone.

I look forward to getting to know all of you throughout the quarter! :)

My name is Isabel and I am a first year biological sciences major on the pre med/ pre health track.

1. My relationship with reading is okay. Lately I have been too busy and haven't made it a priority. Personally I grew distant from reading when it became more like a chore around my third and fourth year of high school. I stopped enjoying it and I just stopped making time for it. I had positive associations with reading during my younger years when it was a form of relaxation and enjoyment. However in my more recent years it's been more of a hassle for me especially when I found other hobbies in high school that took up my time. I have been trying to reconnect with reading and have a few books that I've started reading. I mostly enjoy adventure and mythological novels.

2. I like creative writing because of the freedom it allows the writer but a type of writing I don't enjoy is poetry because I was never given the proper skill set or resources to learn poetic writing. I've associated writing with neutrality, I don't hate or love it. I did start writing about my days more frequently and I've used it as a way to decompress and process certain things. I like writing when there aren't so many restrictions, rules, and formats which is why I grew to love creative writing. Journaling gives me that creative freedom where I can express myself honestly and without rules.

Hi everyone! I'm Bre and I'm currently undeclared and exploring different majors of my interests.

1. I would describe my relationship with reading to be very flexible and ever-changing. I go through waves of avid reading- especially when I find a novel or series that gains my interest- but don't have a constant healthy relationship with reading. In general, I have positive associations with reading because it allows me to dive into different worlds and escape from my own reality. However, when I find myself super busy or stressed, I don't tend to lean on reading as a stress-reliever. I typically enjoy non-fiction novels (I'm a sucker for romance and drama) because it truly romanticizes life in the best way. I prefer paperback novels, but have recently used online books since they're more accessible. I'm excited because I think this course could reconnect me with my love for reading and could be very beneficial in that sense.

2. As for writing, it is another activity that I don't participate in as much as I should. I always wished that I could be the person that consistently journaled or relied on writing to express my feelings, but I am more so the person that talks things through with my support system. I wouldn't consider myself to have negative associations with writing, but when I was doing lots of essays and such in school, it became more of a chore than something I enjoy to do in my free time. When I choose to write recreationally, it tends to be about deep and personal topics that are sometimes hard to talk about with others. My writing tools are definitely physical- you should see my pen collection! I enjoy writing and journaling much more when I can make it appealing to the eye.

I am eager to get to know you all and for us to grow collectively as readers and writers. :)

1. My relationship with reading right now is mutual. I read on occasion just for fun but I have never been a dedicated reader my whole life. I would say the I read either a magazine or a book about 2-3 times a week so its not a lot, but not a little. At times, we have a positive association when I enjoy what I am reading, but at other times we have a negative relationship in times where I don't wanna read but I do because I know it will help me in the long run. Like I stated earlier, I like to read books or magazines specifically about sports because I love sports. I use tools such as the internet and my library and I am not sure if it counts but I sometimes listen to e-books or podcasts during my free time.
2. My relationship at the moment with writing is a love/hate relationship as weird as that sounds. I say this because sometimes I can produce good pieces of writing and I can feel confident about them, but other times I feel like I can't write to save my life. Throughout my education writing has been one of my weaker spots, but I always try to improve on it by practicing and by reading more so I can expand my vocabulary. I normally write essays for school, but during my free time I like to write anything that I can think of whether its a short story or just a little summary of my day. Some of the tools I use to help me write are just anything that helps me with my grammar or with my spelling or punctuation. I also try to read as much as I can so I can take elements from the readings and use them in my own pieces.

Right now, I am not reading for pleasure and I’m just reading textbooks for my classes. In the past, I used to read fictional books a lot because I truly enjoyed reading. I go through phases of loving to read and hating it because I associate reading with school. While I wish reading was a break and a way for me to relax, I’ve been associating it with school for so long that I don’t enjoy it as much. However, when I do find a book that I love, I have a hard time putting it down, but unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case recently. I usually like to read Young Adult fictional novels and I’ve been in the middle of reading “The Midnight Library” since March, but I haven’t found time or motivation to finish it. I hope that I can eventually develop a passion for reading.

I’ve never been a fan of writing and it’s definitely not my strong suit. I don’t enjoy writing analytical papers because I always feel constricted to follow the “formula” my high school teachers provide. However, on the rare occasion that we get assigned a research paper or personal essay, I enjoy writing those because there’s more freedom. My favorite thing is to write research papers where you can choose any topic that you find interesting because you can deeply learn about something new. I definitely value freedom when I’m writing and based off of the reading, I believe this class and future college courses will provide that.

1. My relationship with reading right now is fairly mixed. I haven't read any physical books that weren't required by classes in a long time. I haven't read a classic/"real" book in a long time as I have always found them very boring. That is why I have moved on to light novels and manga as they keep me invested. I don't buy physical copies of the light novels and manga as the prices now are really high. A single volume from Japan can cost nearly $30, which is very high for something I can read for free online. I usually use websites that are often pretty sketchy, but it is free. Although this may not count as real reading a book, I read manga and light novels on a daily basis. But since they are shorter than average books, I have finished many series. This is due to the fact that when I get invested, I can read for hours on end without rest. I once finished a 1200 chapter light novel in 2 days. The book genres I read are all over the place. I can read practically anything, but my personal preference is fantasy series as they are often more unique and interesting. The light novel I am reading currently is called, "Classroom of the Elite" by Shogo Kinugasa.
2) My relationship with writing is a lot worse than my reading relationship. I don't remember the last time I had written anything that wasn't required by a class. I always wanted to write more, but my motivation has always dropped. The kinds of things I would write would always be essays that were required by classes. But if I ever had the opportunity to write something without losing motivation would be something lore-based. The tools I used to write are usually on the computer as I am more tech-savvy. I type much quicker than I can write, so it helps me keep up with my thoughts. I don't really use any external programs to help me write besides Word or Google Docs in which I use to write on. Honestly, my associations with writing are slightly negative because I haven't found much enjoyment in it. All the associations I have are with deadlines and rubrics I had to follow.

Hello! My name is Taelyn and I am a first year Animal Biology major.

1: My relationship with reading right now is somewhat good. I really enjoy reading, but I haven't had the time or energy to do so in a while. I tend to have positive associations with reading. Lately, most of what I read has been either my sister's writing or my own writing. Other than that I generally like to read novels. My favorite genres are science fiction and fantasy. Another thing that I like to read would be old journals from different points in my life. The tools I use to read are usually either physical copies of books or reading on my Nook. When it comes to reading my own or my sister's writing, I usually use my computer.

2: My relationship with writing is very positive, and I have very positive associations with writing. I write a lot in my free time, it is one of my favorite things to do. The kinds of writing I do would be journaling, short stories, and poetry. My high school class actually published a book together, and I have several pieces of poetry published in that book. I like to write poetry to free my mind and destress, as sometimes it allows me to do so in a more creative manner than journaling. As for my short stories, my favorite genre to write is usually fantasy. I am very fond of creative writing, especially when it comes to creating characters and the worlds they live in. Journaling, like poetry, is also something I do to destress. I tend to switch between poetry and journaling depending on how I’m feeling and how much time I have, but I enjoy both methods. I also keep a journal so I can look back on things that were happening in my life. Currently, I only do stream of consciousness journaling, but soon I would like to start keeping an additional journal for following journal prompts.

1. I love reading, but I struggle to read. Almost every book I read in high school I enjoyed, but I needed an audiobook to be able to read it. I know that reading is a skill that can only be mastered through practice, but I wish reading wasn't so hard for me. If I was a great reader, meaning I can read fast while absorbing the information, I would read a lot more. I was in the middle of the first book of the Lord of the Rings series before I came to UC Davis, but since reading requires a lot of time and effort for me I haven't picked up the book since. I usually like to read fiction, but more specifically fantasy books. I use a lot of audiobooks when I read.

2. My relationship with writing right now is terrible; although, a couple years ago it was horrendous. My relationship with writing has always been bad, but through the years it has gotten better as I have practiced. Around my second semester of sophomore year is when I really made an improvement in my writing, which I am really proud of. Even after my great improvement, I still think I am a bad writer; thus, making my relationship with writing terrible. One thing I really lack in my writing skills is confidence. I wish I had the confidence to write because I think that would greatly improve my writing. I like to write about topics that interest me. For instance, sports or chess are my favorite hobbies. When I write I look at examples online in order to learn other techniques that could improve my writing.

Hi everyone! My name is Kaelyn, and I am a first year Spanish major.

I think I have left behind my relationship with reading, which makes me sort of sad to think about. I had a positive association with reading. When I was in high school, I was what you would call a bookworm, I would pick up a book and wouldn’t put it down until I was done reading. I read a lot for just pure enjoyment. At some point, though, I drifted away from it, mainly because I didn’t have the time and got too caught up with my busy life and gave it a negative association. Now when I think of reading, I think about having to do some boring homework that is going to take me all day, but now looking back I miss it. I really enjoyed reading fiction, it allowed me to step out of my reality and jump into someone else’s. I was also getting into nonfiction Chicano books, mainly because I have struggled with my identity, and I was able to heavily relate to the people in these books. One of my all-time favorite books is called, “The Distance Between Us” by Reyna Grande about a child leaving her life and identity behind in Mexico only to struggle more in the US. I do dislike e-books, I like hard copies and being able to hold them in my hand. I hope I will one day eventually get back into reading for fun.

My relationship with writing right now is okay. I am not going to lie, I do have a negative association with writing. I think of it as a chore, mainly because of school. Not only that, but I, much rather, prefer having conversations and discussions without having to write, I will also call someone instead of text if there are no interruptions. One of the main things I use writing for is homework and communicating with others through text. I think I would enjoy writing if it wasn't so associated with school. The essays I liked writing the best back in high school were the ones where I had the least amount of rules and the most amount of freedom, also the ones where I got to talk about myself and my opinion. I hope this class mends my relationship with writing a little more.

I felt my relationship with reading is inseparable. I felt positive while reading the book. Normally I read books everyday. I am currently reading A Short History of Chinese Philosophy by Feng Youlan. In my daily life, I rarely read the news or blogs. I often read paper books. Generally speaking, I like to read books on history, politics and philosophy. Of course, I also try to read books of different genres, cultures and perspectives. Just like history, we as students have to understand and accept the views of both the left and the right. This ensures neutrality and objectivity. I'm glad I like to read. I think reading does not change a person quickly, but subtly and silently. Therefore, I like to read in a quiet and cool place. Also I take a highlighter with me and annotate in the book.

I believe that I write everyday. The relationship between writing and me is very close. I think writing is better because I'm a shy person and I'm not very good at expressing myself. I write now either for homework or to chat with others. Occasionally, I do write in my diary and my own feelings about life. Probably English is not my first language, but I don't like to use English to write. But I need to do it. For instance, Russian Author Vladimir Nabokov tried to use English to write some great novels. I need to learn from him. I like to write with a fountain pen, on paper. The computer I usually use and my poor typing skills lead me to look at the keyboard a lot. So much so that I am often distracted.

My name is Ernesto Perez and I am a third year nutritional sciences major on the pre med track

1. My relationship with reading is not as great as it should be right now aside from reading textbooks. I loved reading at an early age but as I got older my passion diminished due to life's stresses and priorities. When I do read a book I often find myself reading about war, Historical events, realistic fiction, and most importantly the Bible. Although it is a rare occasion to find myself reading a novel I do read articles on a daily basis. Whether its about the current world news or information about fitness I value research and the importance of knowledge (both academically and about life).

2. My relationship with writing is at an healthy place right now. Aside from texting, sending emails and responding to discord I am consistently put in a position where I need to write in the classes I am taking. For example as a third year I have had quite a bit of experience writing in multiple classes while using different techniques. In UWP 1 I learned the importance of reading with purpose, and that purpose was recognizing the author's techniques and applying it to my own writing if found appropriate. The skills helped me greatly especially in my organic chemistry classes. It is a requirement to write lab reports in the 118 series and understanding the correct form of writing allows for an adequate paper.

As a non-native speaker, I’m not reading for fun and pleasure. My main objective of reading is to study. Now I only read textbooks and some resources related to my course. I love reading books in Chinese, cuz obviously using first language is less frustrating than using second language. I tried read some fiction in Chinese first then English, beside getting more vocabularies I find it repetitive. I really don’t like extensive reading especially on academic articles. But is this what textbook is? It is really conflicting, I want to read more fictions but now I’m stuck with a bunch of textbooks. So in conclusion I do not have a very positive association with reading, I don’t wanna say its bad but I need more time and more practice on it. Though sometimes I was soooo reluctant to put effort in it, now I tried to be active on this.

Ok writing is the least thing I want to do in this world.( I mean academically and sometimes like this) I’m always worried about grammars and spellings……. I like to text and write emails to my teachers in my high school. The most common scenario of me writing in English is when I’m communicating with someone who speak English. The most extensive writing experience I have is when I’m applying to universities, I wrote like 10 or 12 essays, and my consulars told my where should change and helped my rephrase my works. We have done that for like 5 to 6 round, and that is exhausting. I have to admit that my writing skill is much better since then. I really like writing in Chinese, I wrote a lot of work and they are beautiful( according to my friends) I wish someday I can write that good in English.

Hi, my name is Siyue Tian from China, you can call me Johnson because Siyue might pronounce as same as "See you". I'm a freshman and my major is mathematics.

First of all, I would like to introduce my relationship with reading. I used to read many books when I was in primary school and junior high school. Ancient Chinese history books and Chinese historical novels were my favorite. However, when I came to high school, many homework and activities occupied my reading time, that's the reason why I only read some books that my teacher required such as "into the wild" or "lord of the flies". I would like to read more during college time. As for me, I prefer paper books instead of E-book like kindle or iPad because using paper books can make me focus, however, when I used E-books, I might change to play games or chat with my friends instead of having read. Honestly, the reading e-book is a good way to annotate and consult.

Besides, Writing has been a horror to me since I was a child. I didn't want to practice writing when I was very young, because I was lazy. Still, keeping a diary has been a habit of mine since I was a child, and it is very enjoyable for me to write what I want. I prefer to write with pen and paper because I think it gives me more to think about. I prefer to practice writing in college, not just journal writing or argumentative and narrative writing in high school. I want to write more about what I want to express.

Heyo! I'm Becky, very undeclared but you know, I'm exploring my options.

1) Reading and I don't really go too well from a young age. I'm usually the person who never wants to read paragraphs and paragraphs of stories unless it's school required, manga, fan fictions that a certain someone consistently tells me to look over before she publishes it on wattpad, something fantasy or sci-fi related or the brief tidbits on the book flaps has captured my attention. Once I do read a book that interests me, I just read nonstop until an outside force stops me and the moment I come back to it, I'd probably already lost interest in coming back until the next time I read it. For tools that I use, besides a bookmark of sorts (spans from rulers to post its to pencils and more), I usually use my phone to read or my computer, or the fancy old physical books to read.

2) For writing, I honestly hate most of the essays I've written for school as I'm not the best at getting my point across nor write in a very detailed way. I know I should write how I want to but yeah, I've just seen it in a negative way. Outside essays, I think I'm not that all bad with creative writing like short stories or poems. Once I come up with an idea for a story I just kinda write away in my own pace. It's kinda weird but sometimes I write my dreams down because experiencing that is like watching a very interesting movie in my sleep and I don't want to forget that experience. Although story-telling and poem making is cool and all, I can't get myself to write about my life. I've tried to journal and have diaries (I even brought a book so I could write my time at Davis there) but I end up not even attempting to write even a word about it(oops random tangent). On the tools I use, I usually just get paper and pen wherever I can find one and just start writing things.

Matthew Fulde's Literacy Introduction

Hi everyone, I’m Matthew and I’m a first year computer science major.

1. My relationship with reading is an especially shaky one. This is because I tend to lose focus or get distracted easily while reading. If I can get really into what I’m reading this rarely happens, but then I tend to accidentally skim what I’m reading and need to go back repeatedly to ensure I understand what is going on. This is definitely a more negative relationship with reading and a lot of my reading boils down to, whether or not I am forced to read, if I am forced then I barely read unless I’m super interested. Personally, my library of literature has changed over the years. In the past it’s been some popular longer titles such as harry potter, but nowadays its more or less devolved to light novels and manga. In terms of tools I always prefer to physically hold a book rather than digitally read it, so in most cases I will buy a physical copy, but if I’m forced to I will use e-books to read certain things.

2. Writing is especially hard for me, I could say even more so than reading. The ability to clearly express ideas in a concise and coherent manner is something I have never been good with. This is definitely a negative relationship, more than the negatives with reading, because at least with reading it's not my ideas being expressed properly it is someone else’s. My inability to clearly and coherently express ideas in writing is why I have a distaste for writing. In terms of what I write about, I enjoy writing stories, or other forms of creative writing. If I’m not given a prompt and am willing to let the pen go, then I can get at least something down, cohesive or not. A lot of times the only tool used is a word document and a keyboard, for me that's always been enough, as my hand hurts too much if I am physically writing.

Harry's Literary Introduction

1. I consider my relationship with reading is neutral because for different kinds of reading, I have diverse emotions and attitudes to them. For the daily reading or spare time reading, I think the relationship is positive. When I have spare time, I will try to find some books and novels to read, normally they are historic books and sometimes it could also be some interesting story books like Harry Potter and The Lord Of The Ring. The reason that I enjoy reading especially the historic books is that I think the reality itself is a good story book and reading it can not only get fun from it but also learn some life lessons. Take the example of "Ming Chao Na Xie Shi" a book about the history of Ming Dynasty, many successful people in the history were not success at first, many of them even fail the imperial examination for more than three times, but they still carry on with 100% confidence and finally pass the exam and enter into the government office to become the governor of the country. However, for the academic readings or reading homework, I usually hold a different attitude and I consider this as negative relationship. When I was in high school, because every day we had tons and tons of homework and books to read which can hardly left the time and space to enjoy reading, in order to ensure my grade at school and get into the university, I need to read those book and get known with their content and writers' opinions. The worse thing besides reading without enjoying is that the books we read, different with other school, the book I need to read are written for the elder readers which means that it is very hard for me to understand the meanings and what the writer want to say. So, after day and day suffering this kind of afflict, I consider this kind of reading as a very boring and useless thing and in this way lead to the negative relationship. For the "tools that i use", I prefer to say" what kind of book that I read." By comparing to other modern kinds of books, I prefer the tradition paper book at all kinds of situation because I think not only the paper book can make the annotation more flexible but also the smells of the paper is another thing that make me feel comfortable during reading. 2 For the writing, I hold a completely different attitude to it. My answer to the relationship is definitely negative. Different with reading, I dislike or hate all kinds of writings since I was very young, the motivation that push me to write is that I want to fulfill the requirement of the courses so that I can get my grade and the main thing that I write about is the homework, sometimes it could be a lab report, sometimes it could be a paper and sometimes it could be an essay. However, the reason that i don't like writing isn't because I am not good at communicating, contrarily, I like talking very much, I can even talk with my friends for the whole day, I hate writing just because I think most of the time, talking can finish the requirement easier and faster than writing but most of the time, we apply writing rather than talking.

Hello fellow classmates! My name is Cory Pham and I am a first year Division 1 Men's Tennis Player and Economics major.

1. My relationship with reading is rather poor, as I am very inconsistent and temperamental in which the rate I read at. I often go through waves of interests in reading, especially when I find a good fiction series or novel. However when I was growing up, reading became more of a necessity and chore rather than interest as my mother often pushed me to read Harry Potter books and TIME magazines in order to become "smarter". As a result, I grew distant from reading and often tried to avoid it as my enjoyment for reading decreased over the years and thus, I made less time for it. Many other activities and hobbies in high school occupied my time, such as tennis. Especially when I constantly read in classes, I viewed reading as a nuisance and never considered it as an opportunity for relaxation.

2. As for writing, I have more of a positive affinity towards it as I mostly enjoy creative writing because the amount of liberty and freedom I am able to have. Throughout high school, I've written many argumentative essays, poems, and research reports that have helped me with my literary skills. Although writing became more of a chore, I find enjoyment in journaling when I am able to write down my own deep personal thoughts and feelings. I sometimes create my own worlds of fantasies that I like to keep adding to with original characters and settings. My tool collection for writing is rather simple, as I only like to use one specific mechanical pencil, pen, and eraser.

My relationship with reading right now is strong. I consider it strong because I find joy in reading. Reading allows me to escape from my stressors in life. I find myself reading about love or mystery most of the time because when I read I imagine the story playing out like a movie. My favorite version of reading is through a paper book. Reading electronically versus through a paper book is a totally different experience.

2. My relationship with writing is strong as well. I’ve never really taken a break from writing. Although I love writing, I am the type of writer who needs a hefty amount of time to write a good essay. I constantly catch myself writing a story and then having ideas come to me which ends up with me rewriting most of the story. Unlike reading, I am not picky with what I write on. I prefer typing rather than writing with a pencil because my hands get tired.

Hello everyone! My name is Adam and I am currently undeclared with an interest in Psychology.

1. My relationship with reading has only ever existed in my academics, as I have never read any book just to read them in my free time. However, many of the books that I have read within the curriculum have been very enjoyable to read, most notably The Kiterunner by Khaled Hosseini and Night by Elie Wiesel in recent memory. Books such as those really made me create an emotional attachment to the characters and subjects, even going as far as making me shed a tear or two (or many). Therefore, I would associate reading with just academics, which sometimes made me put them off, as they sometimes felt like a chore rather than something I can indulge myself in. However, the opposite can also be true to me, where I read ahead of where I was supposed to, wanting to know more of what happens, not thinking about what I was initially assigned. There aren't any tools that I use for reading, unless you count bookmarks, however I would definitely like to know what kind of tools that are used.
2. My relationship with writing is quite poor at the moment. Ironically, I believe my writing has gotten worse over my high school years, as my analysis essays were scored highly my freshman year, but dwindled down throughout the continuing three years, especially my senior year during Covid. I believe this is likely in part to the time given to write essays going down around 10 minutes year by year and my weak suit being time management. This is why I would like to refine my writing once again and get that satisfaction of giving a solid, sophisticated analysis that makes sense to the reader.

During the summer I was reading books because I would have a lot of free time but now that the free time has gone away from me I haven’t been reading much. Once I get a little more free time after my football season, I want to begin to read more because I really enjoyed the read. I have a pretty positive associations with the reading because when I was younger I used to read all the time and I loved it. I used to read a lot of books that were in a series because they were the most entertaining to me. Recently, I’ve been reading textbooks only because of school. I usually like action books or really just anything that has a good story to tell. I don’t usually use any tools for reading but when I do it’s usually a podcast to listen to the book.

2.) Currently, my relationship with writing is pretty good.

Hello everyone! My name is Synthia and I am a biochemistry and molecular biology major. I am thinking about minoring in human development and I am on the pre-med track!

1. Right now I have an okay relationship with reading. It is a positive relationship though. I really enjoy reading yet I barely can find the time to read anymore. Over the summer I would read for at least 30 minutes after I woke up in the morning and before I went to bed, but I have lost that habit since school started. I really enjoy horror books and I have recently gotten into more non fiction books in the genres of philosophy, psychology and self-help. I used to only like to read paper books because it always feels like I'm actually reading as opposed to just scrolling on my phone to read. Recently, though, I have gotten more into reading on my phone because it's easier to access at anytime of day and there is more access to a wide variety of books.

2. I have a positive relationship with writing as well. I do associate some negative feelings towards writing because of high school because I found it hard to fit into the rubric expectations of essays. I also grew a negative association with writing because it became very controlled and more of something that was forced. On the other hand, I really enjoy creative writing and writing about topics I am interested about. I try to write at least everyday in my journal, about whatever I am thinking. It is nice to have an outlet of all my thoughts and feelings through writing. I also like to use writing for all of my classes when I take notes. I prefer to hand write notes instead of typing them because I feel like I retain the information better. I have a huge collection of journals that I have filled up over the years with writing and some other tools I use are mainly just pencils because I prefer not writing in pen ( in case of mistakes).

I look forward to (hopefully) get to know you guys better!

My relationship with reading isn't so great as I'd like it to be, but it sure has improved! The best way to describe it would definitely be a love hate relationship. When I was younger, I used to spend so much time reading books and enjoying it, you couldn't get my head out of the books! As I grew older, it seemed more like a chore for me. I felt like this because teachers would always force us students to read long books and require us to do so much more, taking the fun out of it. I only find myself reading if it is for classwork or homework assignments. I'll maybe be lucky if I find a book that somewhat interests me and I'll begin reading it. I also believe I don't read as much as I can because I am always so busy with either work or school. I have tried to get back into reading, but I haven't been very determined. What catches my attention in books is journaling books! This year, I have bought so many journaling books and mindset books. I love to work on myself and my mindset so these books excite me very much. The problem for me is that I daydream a lot and get distracted VERY easily. Sometimes (most times) when I am reading something, I re-read it a bunch of times because I cannot get myself to focus and understand because I will be thinking of other things while reading or focusing on what is going on in the background. I find myself having to be in a really quiet place because the littlest things and noises will distract me and get me off guard. I prefer hard copies of books because I like to have it hands on. I CANNOT do e-books or any sort of online reading because I like the feel of a nice, new book! I feel like e-books just drain out my eyes and hurt them with so much screen time! I also just feel like it isn't the same excitement as having the hardcover book in your hands. One of my goals this spring/summer is to get back into reading and share the strong passion I used to have for it!

2. As for writing, it is also very similar with reading. Except, I have always dreaded writing because I overthink it. I talk myself out of it because I think negatively about it, but like I mentioned, I have been getting back into it with my journaling books because they have writing prompts!

Hello there, My name is Justin Han. I am an international student from China and I am major in undeclared social science.
My relationship with Literacy is a positive association. I love to read some fiction and some stories when I was young. I love it because the word in the book is like have special magic will bring me to a new world. I can see the world that dinosaurs live together with humans; the world that people can practice getting magical power to fly and even destroy the earth; the world that people tell no lies and only focus on survive. These scenes in the book will let me feel myself in a variety of worlds feel the difference and embrace it.
But when I grow old I gradually felt that I don't have any time for reading. the study, make friends, play computer games, and different types of video make me don't have any time that can let me seat down and read a book. And I gradually feel that I have no patient in reading. There are so many types of entertainment, reading time is been replace by others. So I only read the book that is useful or can teach some specific skills. This makes me lose the ability to read a long story and it is always annoying me.
For writing, I don't have too much experience. But I love it. When I was alone I will write something like a little poem, daily, and prose. When I writing something, I can think of a lot of new things that I will not think of when I was speaking. So I am willing to write. But I think my writing skill is not so well so I want to learn this from this class.

I am happy to know all of you guys, let study together and make some improvement on our reading and writing skill.

Hi everyone! My name is Curtis Lam and I’m currently a first year Art History major hoping to also double major with communications.

1. I would like to state for the record that I love reading. I read anything from magazines to textbooks because I think reading is such a fun pastime and such a brilliant way to keep your mind sharp. I think reading is such a positive pastime because it’s fun and helps improve vocabulary. I mainly read informational books like textbooks or history books but sometimes when I’m bored I’ll read fashion magazines to study new trends (trend forecasting) and topics that are currently popular within the media. But unfortunately I haven't gotten the chance to read a book because over the summer, I was busy with my part time job. I do view reading in the class a little bit more difficult because the incentive is different and interpreting in class text is way more complex and difficult than the stuff I read at home. But overall, I love reading and want to find more time to do it.

2. Writing. It’s an awfully complex thing to grasp, in my opinion. This is partially because of my past history in it. I always feel like my writing is never good enough and always needs improving. When I feel like I’ve written the perfect paper, my peers will tell me that it was horrible. Because of this, I’m usually not a very confident writer and try to avoid it most of the time. The only time I write is for class assignments, I usually don’t write on my free time. Some tools I usually use while writing and grammar and spell check and Knitecite to cite my source documents.

Hi everyone, I’m Joey Xiang and currently in material science & engineering. I’m currently a freshman and I believe I can discover my true interest through a variety of courses.

1. I believe my relationship with reading varies from time to time as I grew up. I was strongly connected to reading when I was young, reaching out to the world through reading a lot of books. But as I rethink of my early experiences with reading right now, I realize it’s a bad habit to have a tendency only to a limited type of books that has interesting stories and intriguing plots. This habit also applies to reading classics and proses. It concerns me as this habit didn’t change much as I step into high school, my courses helped me understand writers’ purposes better and introduced me to various type of writing methods and I became experienced with how the writers develop their story. But at the same time, I was less engaged with academic reading materials. As for now, I feel I’m less connected with reading unless I’m forced into reading materials. My goal is to rebuild the healthy relationship with reading and be more experienced with academic reading materials.

2. Creative writing is something that I didn’t practice very often but would enjoy a lot. I’m not very sure about what we will write for creative writing, but I do enjoy the journal entries I wrote when I was in high school, I enjoy the freedom and the feeling of analyzing the structures and techniques the writers are using. I’m sure I will enjoy learning how to use language strategically and stylistically to properly present my ideas.

My relationship with reading is building up. I am not a reader, but I started reading more after high school. I have always been very insecure about my reading because I am not a great writer and it causes me sometimes to feel worried about my reading. I do not have any negative associations. I am very positive that I allow myself to do this out of my comfort zone. It feels great having a goal such as improving my reading as well my writing skills. The kind of thing I like to read is poetry. I've been very into poetry especially when it's about romance. In my last year of high school, I started writing small poems. This was before I started reading poetry. I would find myself drawing the simplest things and on the back adding a short poem of love, friendship, and kindness. As I said earlier I am not a reader as much, yet since freshman year I would write journals about my days. till now I still write and that influences me to read novels that are just like journals about people’s lives. I also like to read fiction.

I like to read fiction because it helps me imagine parts of the novel easier and I love how creative fiction can be. I don't use tools. I don't know what you refer to as tools, but a tool that helps me improve my reading is a word search. It May sound weird, but I like to read words that I am not familiar with while I look for them. Google translator is what I also like to use when I read an unfamiliar word and don't know how to pronounce it

I can always use that. Another tool is reading out loud. Some apps read out loud for you depending on the novel. Which is always helpful when you just want to relax and listen to your book.
I also like to read my childhood books because it brings me comfort and warmth.

2. My relationship with writing is neutral. We both are okay with each other and we struggle sometimes, but we work together at the end slowly. I love to write in my free time. That's when my relationship with writing is amazing. When I get assigned to write an informative essay as an example. I do poorly, but yet with the help of others, my writing starts to get together. I don't have any negative associations.I sometimes become sad because I want to be such a good writer which is nothing wrong with, but I sometimes let my feelings get to me. I like to write about anything, journals, poems. My journal is my best friend. I don't use any tools. I do like to use Grammarly for my punctuation.

Hi, my name is Jessie and I am a first year communications major.
1) My relationship with reading is not great. Personally, I cannot say reading is something I spend much time doing and I don't typically enjoy it. I think that somewhere along the lines during school I stopped enjoying it because it just felt like more work when I already had enough homework as it was. Since, not having a true love for reading I tend to struggle to read books quickly and understand them completely. I also have just been very busy throughout my high school career and did not make reading a priority. I was constantly traveling for sports competitions and that was what I loved doing so I would spend all of my time with that and not leave myself time to spend reading. Although, I am not sure what books I would like I am interested in psychology and I love quotes so maybe some books along those lines.

2) My relationship with writing is better than my relationship with reading. When I am writing something that I am passionate about I could go on forever because it is something that I want to express to the audience that my be reading it. I always writing as a way to slow my brain down and let go of things. By writing stuff down I feel like it makes me way less stressed out and makes me feel more engaged in what I am doing. I really enjoy journaling, and I write down things that I think are important for me to remember weather that is good advice or something I need to get done that day. I also love to write out my schedules because I think it is the best way for me to stay organized and remember all of the tasks I need to get done.

Hi my name is Jessie and I am a first year communications major.

1) I don't really enjoy reading. I think it was something that was always forced or pushed upon me to do. I was never the kid that wanted to read books on their own. I wanted to be outside running around and playing sports. It also was not something that was naturally easy for me to do, so from a young age I kind of shied away from it. In high school it was always a chore that my English teachers assigned. Throughout this class I hope I can gain a more positive experience with reading. I think a big part of why I didn't love reading is because I spent a lot of my time travelling to different sports events and never prioritized reading.

2) I have a very positive relationship with writing. Writing is my go to for getting things out of my head. It helps me study and remember things better. I write my schedules out to remain organized. I write down good advice or quotes that I think are applicable to my life. I don't think of writing as a chore and it is something that comes more naturally to me than reading does, if I am writing about something that I care about I could go on forever. I have gone back and forth over writing a book or short novel about some of my life experiences. I have written many college essays, scholarship essays, etc and I actually enjoyed writing most of them.

My name is Amber and I’m undecided major.

1.My relationship with reading is great. I love reading my favorite books. For example, I enjoyed reading mystery novels because their exciting plots grabbed me and kept me hook. One plot lead to another and all linked closely. So I can not wait to read them. Also, When I was a child, I read books too. I read the poetry collection and recited some of them. It is a good way to broaden my knowledge. And I can be able to quote them in my thesis, which can strength their credibility. I always read book in my vacation. I was overwhelmed by my homework in high school and I have no time to read them. For me, I like read printed versions because I believe that they are more official and authentic than reading books on electronic devices.

2.My relationship with writing is not very great. I have always struggled with coming up new ideas and transfer what I was thinking in my mind to a sentence. Also, I was not good at utilizing proper words and grammar. To polish my essay, I used translation and grammar correction. So I am constantly terrified of writing. However, in UMP7 class, I will be able to learn how to write and what policies I should follow. These days, I’ve been writing literary journal. Although it is hard for me at first, I believe I can handle with it and become more proficient.

1) My relationship with reading right now is so-so. I haven't been reading a ton because there's been a lot of big changes in my life, but I do try to pick up a book when I can. I tend to have positive or neutral feelings towards reading because after I've just finished reading a page or chapter my brain just feels so relaxed and at peace. I like reading true crime stories and novels based on peoples experiences. Truthfully though I haven't made as much time for reading as I should have. I used to read a lot more when I was younger, but now I only really do it in my spare time. I typically like to read hard cover books, but I've taken to using my iPad or computer as well. I also have a subscription to the apple iBooks so I use that a lot too.

2) I would describe my relationship with writing as underdeveloped. I feel like I have a lot of potential to be a good writer, but I never put the effort into it. I like writing when I'm interested in the topic, but if I'm not I just find it hard to come up with what to say. Thats definitely a barrier I've been trying to work on so I can get back into it. I tend to have neutral or negative associations with writing just because I don't do it as much unless its for a school assignment. I find myself drawn to creative writing more than anything, but I'm also pretty neutral when it comes to the different types. I usually write essays and school work on my computer, but I copy notes and journal with a paper and pen.

Hello everyone, my name is Emily. I'm a 2nd year Human Development major.

1. My relationship with reading isn't the best right now and I wish it was better. I used to be able to sit down and read a book but now because of social media I'm used to reading small amounts of text at a time. I sometimes find articles or books that I am really interested in and that’s when I am able to read for a long time. When I am reading there are always words that I do not know the meaning of and I use the online dictionary to find the meaning. Using a dictionary to find the definition helps me understand the text better so it’s the most useful tool for me.

2. My relationship with writing is also very poor because for years now I have been typing up a lot of my work for my classes. Most importantly for the past year and a half we have been having online classes so none of the work was ever written down. Before we had classes online I used to write essays on paper once in a while and I used to also take a lot of notes on paper. For a few of my classes last year I still took a few notes but it wasn’t the same as before. One writing that I have kept up with over the years is to write in my planner since it is what keeps me on track with my school work. Writing helps me understand everything better because while writing I retain the information better.

My relationship with reading is currently good, so I would say that I have positive associations with reading. I used to have this kind of association before my junior year in highschool. Unfortunately, I felt myself losing this kind of association with reading during the past two years. Nevertheless, I started to build it again this summer by going to a local bookstore on a regular basis. I’m now open to reading a lot of different things on all distinctive grounds. However, it’s not always easy for me to comprehend everything that I read. I may get confused sometimes when reading complicated articles. Therefore, my preference of reading is definitely not complex scientific articles. I love reading fiction, novels and sometimes poems! (I’m obsessed with the flow in poems) One of my favorite books that I recently read is Fahrenheit 451. It really reveals how insane things could go, and I sort of like books that reveal reality. I used kindle on my ipad to read this book, and kindle is one tool that I use the most when I’m reading.

My relationship with writing is even better than my relationship with reading! I feel that it’s easier for my brain to output than to input. I would definitely say that I have had positive associations with writing since day 1! Furthermore, I’m not worrying about or being afraid of anything about writing. I write about everything, especially simple daily stuff that is important to me. I wrote little articles for all of my friends on their birthdays, and I even wrote one after I bumped into my highschool advisor on the first day after her maternity leave during COVID. In fact, I used to write journals every day during my first two years in junior high school. Thus, writing turned out to be a hobby of mine! I still write about things that impress me or make me happy, but it’s just like typing them down on my phone.

(You are welcome to see this picture of me and my advisor!! She is the most important person to me during my four years in PA.)
