<title>2) Malaria is a mosquito-borne parasitic infection spread by Anopheles mosquitoes. The Plasmodium parasite that causes malaria is neither a virus nor a bacterium – it is a single-celled parasite that multiplies in red blood cells of humans as well as in the mosquito intestine. </title>

<title>3) You can only get malaria if you&#39;re bitten by an infected mosquito or if you receive infected blood from someone during a blood transfusion. Malaria can also be transmitted from mother to fetus during pregnancy. It enters the bloodstream and invades red blood cells. Eventually, the infected red blood cells burst. This sends the parasites throughout the body and causes symptoms of malaria.</title>

<title>4)Symptoms usually appear about 1 to 3 weeks after infection. People with malaria will have many but not generally all of the following symptoms:-abdominal pain-chills and sweats-diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting (these symptoms only appear sometimes)-headache-high fevers-low blood pressure causing dizziness if moving from a lying or sitting position to a standing position (also called orthostatic hypotension)-muscle aches-poor appetite</title>

<title>7) If recognized early, malaria infection can be completely cured. The medication chosen by your doctor depends on: the type of malaria, the area you traveled to or visited when you contracted malaria, and the severity of the illness. Treatment usually lasts for 3 to 7 days, depending on the medication type. The most common antimalarial drugs include:Chloroquine (Aralen), Quinine sulfate (Qualaquin), Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), Mefloquine, or a combination of atovaquone and proguanil (Malarone).</title>

<title>8) To prevent exposure, before travelling, check with your doctor or travel clinic about the region&#39;s malaria status. Risk of infection also depends on: altitude (lower altitudes have higher risk), camping vs. hotel stay, length of stay-rural vs. urban areas (rural areas have higher risk). </title>

<title>10) I am very familiar with the pathogen parasite Plasmodium. A friend of mine contracted malaria while backpacking through Peru. He was near the Peruvian amazon and was bitten by an infected mosquito. He described it as the worst he has ever felt and thought he was dying. He explained even pulling his bed sheets over his body felt like little razor blades due to the infection. He was bed ridden for 4 weeks while being treated. I scared me soo much, I doubt I&#39;ll be visiting the amazon area in my life time. </title>

<title>6) Most people infected with malaria live in tropical, humid climates. As this is the best habitat for the infected mosquitoes. Travelers to these regions are also susceptible to contraction while on holiday. </title>

<title>9) Since mosquitoes are night feeders, stay away from fields, forests, and swamps to avoid being bitten. Use permethrin-treated mosquito netting when sleeping. Using mosquito coils and aerosolized insecticides containing pyrethroids may also help improve protection during this time.</title>
