Symbol (The Beast)

The beast is represented in the book as a "snake thing" and is brought to attention by the boy with the mulberry colored birthmark, "He still says he saw the beastie. It came and went away again an' wanted to to eat him-" (Golding 36). The beast is later talked about in the novel when the boys are talking about what it could eat. “What would a beast eat?” “Pig.” “We eat Pig,” (Golding 83). This quote is showing how in Piggy and a Jack’s debate they show a similarity that the beast and the kids both eat the same thing. This can be leading the story to show how the beast is just a figure of the kids imaginations and is causing them to be scared and do things they normally wouldn’t. The beast represents the primal savagery that exists in all of the kids.

Jack is one of the first characters introduced into the beginning of the book as the leader of the choir boys. Jack represents the lead of anarchy and rebellion. He is portrayed in the book as an ugly, tall, and bony kid. "Inside the floating cloak he was tall, thin, and bony; and his hair was red beneath the black cap. His face was crumpled and freckled, and ugly without silliness. Out of this face stared two light blue eyes..." (Golding 20). Jack’s personality can be identified as arrogant. Jack had started out as a good leader with Ralph, but over time Jack had became very stubborn and hard-headed, “Because the rules are the only thing we’ve got!” But Jack was shouting against him. “Bullocks to the rules! We’re strong-we hunt! If there’s a beast...We’ll close in and and beat and beat-!” (Golding 91). This quote is also showing how Jack is changed from a good leader with Ralph in the beginning of the book to a different person with different ways of thinking.

Ralph is one of the first kids introduced into the novel. Ralph plays the roll of the protagonist and leader in the novel. Ralph is 12 years old, has blond hair, and is fit and athletic but also looked like a nice person. " He was old enough, twelve years and a few months to have lost the prominent tummy of childhood...You could see now that he might make a boxer... his mouth and eyes that proclaimed no devil," (Golding 10). This quote is showing that Ralph is built athletic but does not have an intimidating face. Ralph is also a good leader in the beginning of the book because of his helpful ideas like attending the fires, "We've go to have special people for looking after the fire. Any day there may be a ship out there," (Golding 42). This quote shows how in the beginning of the book Ralph is a good leader and is good at keeping control, but eventually Ralph will lose these skills due to the other kids losing their sanity.

Theme

A theme that occurs through out the novel is the theme of Civilization vs. Savagery. This theme occurs due to the constant conflict between Ralph and Jack. Ralph and Jack both have different views about what to do on the island. While Jack want to Go hunting and do whatever, Ralph wants to keep order and get rescued. "We ought to have more rules. Where the conch is, that's a meeting," (Golding 42). Later in the novel Jack decides to split up form Ralph's group and create his own group. "I'm not going to be a part of Ralph's lot-" "I'm going off by myself... Anyone who wants to come hunt when I do can come too," (Golding 127). These quotes show how Jack would be representing the savages because of their lack of order, and how Ralph represents the Civilized because he has order. This conflict will lead to one of the groups having a positive turnout and one group will have a negative.
