One intended audience of this song is anyone who feels like they're being jostled around by life. Individuals in this population would be drawn to this song because as much as we try, we can't control everything. Alanis does a great job of pointing out the expectations and then the sometimes unintended outcomes. For example, her lyric "Mr. Play-It-Safe was afraid to fly. He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye. He waited his whole damn life to take that flight. And as the plane crashed down. He thought, "Well, isn't this nice?" Sometimes life just happens to you. And there is comfort in knowing you aren't alone. - Ari

Alanis Morissette’s song “Ironic,” explores the theme of melachony through her use of irony (like the title) in different life scenarios , revealing situations where outcomes differ from what one would anticipate, in a rather dispiriting tone. “It’s a death row pardon two minutes too late” (line 4). The lyrics show the contradictions and unexpected turns in everyday life, while a blending humor and pathos. -Moyo Awe

Irony (situational) (dramatic)

“It's meeting the man of my dreams, and then meeting his beautiful wife“

This song expresses situational irony by the end result the writer of the song ends up finding attractiveness in “the man of their dreams” husband. This is expected to be the man of their dreams and ironicly the song actually means a beautiful (man) representing the expression of same sex marriage which is ironic because the writer of the song imposes of meeting “the man of their dreams and then his (beautiful husband) -the song could also appose as dramatic irony through out the entire song

Someone would not expect to meet the man of their dreams only to find out that the man is married.

Fre’Shana bien
