My name is Kiara Garcia Soto. I am a sophomore at Stanislaus state university. I am pursuing a degree in business specifically in Human Resources. I feel like my degree will let me help people who deal with difficult, terrible, or unsustainable situations at work. I didn’t really know what I wanted to study while in college until someone pointed out that I would be good at Human Resources. Mainly because you get to choose the people you hire, you get to train them, and you get to keep everything in check and organized.  Some of my favorite hobbies are watching K-dramas, Thai dramas, C-dramas, or any type of TV show that involves two characters falling in love. I also enjoy reading books as well as listening to all types of music. The music I enjoy listening to the most currently is Latin music or anything in South America, to Italian music, to French or to Korean. If it’s catchy and nice to listen to I will listen to it.  I also love to go to new places like restaurants or to different sceneries with my family or friends. I feel like I would also enjoy traveling even though I haven’t been out of the country yet, but it is on my bucket list. Hopefully, I get to do that soon. Another thing that I really love is food I can never go on a diet because I enjoy food too much, I should probably fix that though. I just want to be successful in life and that is why I put my vision board as the image. I hope I can be like those women and  I get to enjoy traveling, shopping, and being stable in life. 
 
Sustainability-when I think of sustainability, I imagine it as something you are trying to maintain in a certain way. Like for example, you should try to keep your life in a sustainable manner to continue to live longer especially in the environmental way. When I say the environmental way I mean recycling, reusing plastic bags you already have, and keeping the lights off when not in use. Little things like that will help you continue to live a sustainable life. I practice sustainability by doing things that I have previously mentioned as well as other things like turning off the water when not in use like when brushing your teeth or face. I just feel like it is something you do to keep the environment in a preserved manner. You need to live in a sustainable way in order for life to keep going.
 
 
Information literacy- when I think of information literacy, I imagine it as information you gather by reading or watching something and understanding it. Then being able to use information you have gathered and applying it in your life. Basically, using new information that you have learned and incorporating it into your everyday life. When you get new information, you also must make sure it’s credible and reliable before using it.  
 
I would like to learn more about both sustainability and information literacy mainly because last semester we barely got into those topics. Therefore, I would love to learn more about both topics in-depth and how the help the world around us.

My research is important because I’m finding all this information from People who have experienced it from the healthcare system and by researching this you can only improve The system by letting other people know. The purpose is to show people what is happening and for them to be aware of it. The research is important to me because I want to know more about this in-depth because I am also a minority and I want to be treated the best way possible when I go to any healthcare place. I hope to learn that it isn’t as bad as what I’ve heard and that people are trying to make it known in order for it to change for the better. The authors purpose is to show that the companies that are the most socially responsible may not be the ones that are the least conspicuous about their social responsibility. Meaning that those with the deepest influence are those who can deploy that influence subtly. She tries to prove the argument to the audience of people who are interested in companies sustainability and social responsibility. The author uses pathos as its appeal by using quotes of other people and their experience. For example she inserted “ as Arvind Ganesan of human rights watch once told me, “ good advocacy is getting somebody to think that it is in their interest to do what you want them to do.” another rhetorical device she uses is logos that appeal to logic is used when bader take into consideration the amount of sustainable related headcount has increased “... 40 percent of the more than 5600 companies they surveyed; Posting for sustainability jobs in the US companies have risen from 300 in 2010 to 700 in 2014...” (Greenbiz.com). This demonstrates how the author is using ideas , Common knowledge, and information from other people to provide a solution to the issues being brought up. The use of pathos and logos were not as effective because they were not brought examples to solutions to finding a resolution to solve the problem that they were facing with with not having sustainability they just mention the problems no solutions. They just say that at the end of the day there is no one in a company whose primary job is to change the world for the better.

Using the IL framework I thought about how this article is part of a continuing conversation on why companies that are the most socially responsible may be The ones that are the least conspicuous about their social responsibility. The evidence she uses is hyper linked in the article and introduced by having the name of the people quoted next to the quote. The article only has people that work at companies with quotes and one source that is a linked website. Those both are enough to create a conversation about the need of sustainability. A person could use his report in a way of saying that there’s a need for more companies to be sustainable with it being equal not an expectation.

  • Purpose: To inform people that there is a problem in the healthcare system that affects people of color compared to white people and that has been happening since the start of the healthcare system. 
  • Potential audiences who can impact change: Doctors, hospital administrators, government officials, and POC.
  • Research question: What programs can be implemented to help doctors and hospital workers recognize and work against unconscious bias and racism in the workplace that will create better health care outcomes for people of color?
  • What my audience knows about this topic: The audience knows that there is racism in America. Therefore, they should connect the dots and assume it happens in hospitals as well. 
  • What questions I have: How many people actually know that this is a huge problem? Are only POC aware of it?

    • What your research question is: How can we put a stop to racism and discrimination happening in hospitals in the United States?
    • What key words you used to search: I did not use any keywords in the regular search bar. I did a second search on A-Z database On the EBSCOhost engine, and I used the keywords stop "racism discrimination" hospitals united states.
    • What filters you used in your search: I used the full-text online, peer-reviewed journals, Articles, publication date from 2000 to 2021, Subject racism, and language English.  For my second search, it did not allow me to use any filters. I don't know if I did it wrong, but only two articles came up.
    • How did you select the sources that you decided to read: I selected articles that included some of the keywords like racism, discrimination, and in hospitals. I also read the abstracts.
    • What questions do you still have about searching? : what happens is you get less than two results or more than 60 results.
    • So I did two searches one the regular just copied and pasted into the search bar and the filters and then the A-Z database, which was more in-depth.

  • Share your strategy for reading : My strategy for reading was using some skimming before actually reading the article to make sure I was reading the correct information. Then I also used the pre-reading such as reading the titles and headings of the articles.
  • What was difficult about the reading process?: The difficult part about the reading process is reading the whole articles when they are super long. As well as sometimes understanding some of the language being used.
  • What helped?: Keeping focus as well as searching up words I could not understand. Sometimes just searching for the key words. 
  • What questions do you still have about reading? : My question is what if my article only includes the information needed in the results part of the article. For example in the article I read it gave most of the information needed in the results.

     The antithesis or the opposite is that racial discrimination does not impact people of color's ability to access healthcare.
    The counter-narrative - Is that there are healthcare providers that are people of color, as well as the fact that we live in an era where you cannot discriminate against people or else you will lose your job, and that everyone has the right to receive all the healthcare benefits they need. As healthcare providers, you should know that you signed up to help everyone regardless of their ethnicity. 
    I think the counter-narrative can help solve the problem by making me take a deeper look at why discrimination and racism impact people of color's ability to access healthcare benefits. It may also help identify the root of the problem like what causes these outcomes. For example, it can be the way they are taught at their nursing school. As well as possible solutions to help stop and improve the way people of color are treated.

    Karen Zandarski Was an amazing mother, professor, and a loving friend. Her murder came to us as a surprise as she was unfortunately found near her laptop  in her last breath. She was always someone you could count on she made sure to help everyone to the best of her ability. She was One of the best professors Stanislaus state university could ever have. She was the most hard-working and patient person you could have ever met. Thank you all for being here today.
