Setting an objective means clearly stating at the beginning of a lesson what students are to gain from the lesson. This way, students know exactly what is expected of their learning. Providing feedback means clearly responding to student's work. This way, students will be able to track their own progress and will have a good idea of how successful they were before they start a new lesson.

The benefits of setting clear objectives and providing clear feedback are: 1. Constant communication between student and teacher. If there is a misunderstanding, disagreement, or dispute between what the student thought they did and how the teacher interpreted the work, or misunderstanding of directions, or anything else, students should have the immediate ability to see the misunderstanding and clarify. By setting objectives and providing feedback, students and teachers should have little surprise about where a student's grade stands. 2. Student's ability to fix work or correct understanding before moving on to the next assignment. This should help keep their grade and progress up. 3. Keeps teacher accountable and engaged with student learning. When the teacher puts the expectation on themselves to keep up with objectives and feedback, it means they have to be present and responsive to student learning in real time and as the unit progresses. This is a great way to keep the teacher accountable.

If Objectives and Feedback are given to students in abundance and in all scenarios, I can imagine it stifling student's risk, creativity, and sense of creating something for themselves. With some lessons and projects, students will have their own Objectives. And this could even be true on assignments that are graded: students could add their own objectives. The ability of the student to creatively express themselves in their work depends on their feeling of autonomy.

Tips for Utilizing the Strengths and Avoiding the Pitfalls

1. Don't use Objectives / Feedback on every little task and assignment. Limit the use of this to a handful of important assignments.
2. Keep Feedback to a couple of the work's strengths and a couple of the work's area's for improvement. Feedback can be difficult for students to absorb all at once, limit responses to some of the most important points so as to not be overwhelming.
3. Keep Objectives as simple as possible, so students can get a grasp of the task right away. The details can be listed later in the assignment.
