The start of the protests and anger all started with Chinese students getting upset due to the students wanting individual rights and freedoms. This was because of the economic growth that had taken place in China in recent years the government encouraged citizens to take a larger political role.

After the death of an icon in their cause, students started to gather in Tiananmen Square on the day of the funeral of Hu Yaobang, to protest for democratic reforms. The government's first response was to give out a stern warning to all the protesters. The day after the funeral of Hu Yaobang, students took part in a hunger strike in the square to as another effort for the reforms to be made

News spreads quickly

It just so happened that a large number of Western reporters were visiting China to get interviews with Mikhail Gorbachev, and so because of the millions of people who had joined the students in the square the event was widely covered all across the world, and seen by many due to the location of the reporters.

Protests spread all over China

during the time of the protests in Tiananmen Square, the government was taken over by the military so troops were sent out to break up protests and to be present around China since they were the new leaders temporarily. When the troops were on their way to Tiananmen Square people in Beijing blocked off the roads and made it impossible for them to get through. A few days into the protests, teachers of the student protesters started to show up in full buses to support.

At first troop came unarmed as a warning of sorts, but a day later tanks and larger groups of armed troops came in and started to open fire on the crowd. Hundreds of people were killed including some of the reporters who had been covering the event. On the second day of the attack students fought back and set fire to a tank that was parked in the square.

Commemerating the tragedy

today, the only place in China territory that is allowed to commemorate this event is Hong Kong. Last year a replica of the "Goddess of Democracy" statue was made and put up on display near the June 4th museum. Also each year outside of the museum,and in the town square where it is located, on June 4th there is a candlelight ceremony to commemorate those affected by the tragedy.

although Hong Kong is home to the only museum in the world that commemorates these events, The museum is actually being removed this in the following months this year. The current museum is on the 5th floor of a building and is the size of an apartment, The owners of the museum have other reasons to remove it but also think its for the best because it isn't doing much justice to the horrible events. The museum is being closed due to recent political pressure in China, and the owners know they are being targeted and need to close it down.

My reaction

I was interested in this topic from the book, and learned a lot more from doing this project. I thought it was interesting to read about how the people involved in the event are honored each year with the ceremony. I found it very sad that there is only one place in all of China that is allowed to know about this event and commemorate it, although people all across China were affected. Overall I thought it was very cool how dedicated the students were and how passionate they were about what they believed in.
