Confident, Matured, Self-Reliant, Adaptable(like the mudskipper):

Despite being placed in an unfamiliar and often unwelcoming environment, Lizhi learns to navigate her new surroundings.

While she struggles with feelings of displacement, she remains determined to build relationships with those around her.

With her mother away, Lizhi is forced to handle challenges on her own.

Role:

-Themes of Identity and Belonging: She navigates the complexities of her mixed heritage and her place within her father’s estranged family. As a child of a foreign mother and a Singaporean father she never met, Lizhi grapples with where she belongs.

-Bridge:

She embodies the tension between different cultures, making her character development an exploration of belonging.

Key Role in the Plot Development

-As she spends more time with her father’s family, Lizhi gradually learns about her father’s past, the family’s secret.

• highly adaptable to environment and people; able to reconcile diff between 2 cultures and able to create an identity for herself

• emotional / very in touch with her emotions — often compares Aunt Mona to her mother (and father?), expresses her feelings of hatred very clearly about grandfather

• resilient — way of coping with father’s death was through positivity and fond memories

2. What role does the character play in plot development?

• Aid us in understanding other characters through her lens as she is the protagonist

• bridge between 2 cultures. child of mixed heritage.

• bridge between reader and the story. conflict that she faces in the story provokes the reader to connect w it.

• events and themes are centred around her. she embodies these themes.

• opposition to Aunt Mona’s authority — provides conflict in the narrative

• lens of a young person (vs lens of older persons in the story) — we get to see the contrast between her curious outlook and the more skeptical outlook of the adults, she is a catalyst of transformation, causes Aunt Mona to question her values/outlook; Lizhi’s self-discovery and maturing as a child

• catalyst that brought about the resolution to the main conflict in the story (unravelled all the family secrets through her interaction with Ah Guan that brought the 2 families together)

Disagreeable person--criticising/making comments about Lizhi's skin colour

Distrustful of others--e.g. kept the receipt of the taxi

Manipulative--hid the fact that Ah Guan was LZ's grandfather; hid the letters; said untrue things about Juliette to upset LZ, to cause a rift between them.

Disrespectful/hierarchical--the way she treated the maid; doesn't give the maid much to do yet demands a lot

Authoritative/opinionated--doesn't accept others' point of view; interrupts LZ when she was explaining about her skin colour

Points the fault at others; unable to see her own flaws (e.g. towards the end of the story with Ah Guan why she hid the letters from LZ.)

Role she plays in the story:

• antagonist in the story (e.g. obsession with skin colour; superiority)

• represents the traditional figure in the story (conservative); upholding tradition and modernism (contrasts Juliette and Michael's free-spirit nature)

• some character growth; able to move out of the house/out to the city, yet still holding on to the past (e.g. taking Bwe Bwe with her)
