I’m curious about the writer Alexander Pope. He once said, “To err is human, to forgive divine,” which is really clever and wise. His work The Rape of the Lock is a satirical piece that mocks the vanity of the upper class. It uses the style of heroic poetry to make fun of those trivial social dramas.

In art, Jacques-Louis David’s Oath of the Horatii is magnificent. Its strict composition and focus on civic duty reflect what Neoclassical literature emphasizes – order and moral behavior. Both the art and literature of this period tried to encourage people to be rational and moral.
