The Kayaking Forward Stroke

Joanna Manaves attended DeVry University and now serves as director of planning and materials management for Peacock Foods in Illinois. An avid traveler, Joanna Manaves enjoys being active and regularly participates in water-based activities such as swimming, paddle boarding, and kayaking.

Kayaking is a sport that involves the use of a kayak in the water. A kayak is a small and lightweight boat that rests low in the water. Kayakers sit inside the boat with their legs in front of them eat and use a double-bladed paddle to propel themselves through the water. Kayaking can take place in a variety of settings that range from calm lakes to whitewater rapids.

When paddling, kayakers utilize numerous strokes to move through the water, including the forward, sweep, draw, and forward reverse strokes. The most fundamental is the forward stroke, which involves a catch, propulsion and recovery phase. To begin the stroke, a kayaker dips the paddle into the water (the catch), then rotates his or her torso to pull and push through the water (the propulsion). The recovery phrase occurs at the end of the stroke, as the kayaker prepares to begin a new forward stroke.

Preparing for a Cheerleading Tryout

The director of planning and materials management with Peacock Foods, Joanna Manaves was once a competitive cheerleader. Competing from ages 7 through 18, Joanna Manaves served as captain or co-captain of her cheerleading team throughout her four years of high school.

If you are preparing to try out as a cheerleader, your preparation should be both physical and mental. Experts recommend that you start by talking to the captain or coach to discover the forms you need to fill out and what you need to wear.

You should also ask what you will need to do during the tryout, how many points each portion will be worth, and if you can have a copy of the score sheet the judges will be using. This will help you focus on the elements that count the most. Regardless of point value, you should give 100 percent to your practice so you will be ready to perform on the day of the tryout.

Enjoying Wildlife Safely in the Greater Scottsdale, Arizona, Area

As Peacock Foods’ director of planning and materials management, Joanna Manaves is responsible for overseeing purchasing, scheduling, inventory control, and other supply chain considerations for her company. Family visits to the Scottsdale, Arizona, area have become an important tradition for Joanna Manaves. She especially enjoys seeing the wildlife on their vacations there.

Scottsdale and the surrounding area is teeming with wildlife. Visitors often catch sight of black bears, javelinas, antelope, mountain lions, eagles, and a variety of reptilian life. While these animals are interesting to watch, they can be dangerous for people and pets. Please consider the following details about wildlife in the Greater Maricopa County area:

- It is illegal to put out food or water for wild animals in Maricopa County. This does not apply to agricultural practices or to people who wish to feed birds and tree squirrels.

- It is very important to store refuse in wildlife-proof containers to avoid drawing wildlife to campsites and other areas where people live and visit. Please dispose of garbage safely and responsibly.

- It is never safe to approach a wild animal even if it is a baby that appears abandoned. In many cases, young animals are left alone during the day while their parents rest or hunt.
