Shake Up Learning by Kasey Bell (Review by Sabrina Minser)

Beyond the walls
Beyond the grade/subject area
Beyond the bell (anytime learning)
Beyond the tools
Beyond the due date

This is a great book that changes the readers mindset about teaching, going from static learning/teaching to dynamic. "Throwing technology at the various problems we have in schools is not the magical solution without purposeful planning aligned with the vision of the school and the learning goals in our classrooms." This is so true. Purpose-driven integration allows transformation of teaching and learning. Please join me and other educators for the ebook club discussions about this book. https://elearningbookclub.blogspot.com/2019/10/shake-up-learning-week-1.html

Hillbillly Elegy by J.D. Vance (Review by Wendy Helmkamp)

I found this book to be an extremely powerful story that enlightened me on the lives and mindsets of many people who live in the "hillbilly culture."

I had never thought about the mindsets of people living in this culture-their tendency to shift blame, and their feeling that there's nothing they can do to change their circumstances and get out of their situations. Although we don't really have students coming from this culture at Canterbury, these are mindsets that hinder lots of people, not just those living in a "hillbilly" society.

On the flip side, the loyalty and honor JD describes that his people feel for their families and friends is admirable. His story is also a testament of the power of positive influences in a young person's life.

I appreciated the opportunity to gain insight into and understanding of a culture very different from what I've lived. JD's story is also a good reminder for teachers about the power we have to positively influence the lives of our students who find themselves feeling hopeless about their situations.

Interestingly, at the same time I was reading "Hillbilly Elegy," my daughter was reading a book called "The Other Wes Moore" for her junior English class. I decided to read that also and it was a similar story about the power of rising above your circumstances and having positve people in your life who help you make good choices. I would highly recommend that book to all who gained insight and inspiration from "Hillbilly Elegy."
