Sandra Boynton is a children's author & illustrator, along with being a songwriter, music producer & director. She was born on April 3, 1953 in Orange, New Jersey. Sandra and her three sisters were raised in Philadelphia by their mother and father. Sandra went to Yale to major in English. Throughout college she designed gift cards & Christmas cards, and had her uncle (who was a printer) print them for her. Sandra then went around to different stores along the East Coast to sell her work. She studied drama at U.C. Berklee for graduate school. In the summer before she started at Berklee, Sandra continued creating more designs and selling her cards. This led her to sign up with a Chicago card company called Recycled Paper Greetings. Sandra ended up dropping out of college, got married, and moved to a farm in Massachusetts. This is when Sandra & her husband had four kids and began writing children's books. As Sandra and her family moved from place to place, she continued illustrating and writing her books, always finding inspiration in her surroundings.

The Going to Bed Book is about a group of animals who live on a ship together as they get ready to go to bed. The animals in this book range from an elephant, to a dog, to a lion, to a pig, and includes many more. The story begins at sunset, and shows the animals going below the ship to take a bath, get their pajamas on, and brush their teeth. This is a perfect story to read before bedtime as it can get the reader and audience excited to get ready for bed, just like the animals in the book. It can also help younger listeners learn how to get ready for bed on their own! The story ends on a calming and sleepy note which makes it a perfect read for bedtime.

But Not The Hippopotamus is a story told in rhymes, about all of the groups of animals that play together while the Hippopotamus is all alone. The illustrations show the other animals having fun together, while the Hippopotamus is sad and lonely. At the end of the story, all the groups of animals join together to play, but still the Hippopotamus is left out, until the group comes back and asks Hippopotamus to join them. After thinking about it, Hippopotamus ends up joining the group. However, the end of the story reveals that there is still an animal being left out, the Armadillo. This story teaches a great lesson about being inclusive to everyone.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/515885.But_Not_the_Hippopotamus

Since 1974, Sandra Boynton has written and illustrated over sixty children’s books, including five New York Times best sellers. More than 70 million of her books have been sold, and six of her books were on the 2001 Publisher's Weekly All-Time Bestselling Children's Books list. Sandra's work is typically geared towards very young children- she uses animals, singing & rhyming to make her stories fun. Boynton has many books, but some of her popular ones include: Dinosaur Dance!, Barnyard Dance!, Pajama Time!, The Going to Bed Book, and But Not the Hippopotamus. The stories that I read are: Snuggle Puppy!, The Going to Bed Book, Moo, Baa, La La La!, Barnyard Dance!, and But Not the Hippopotamus. I love how easy and fun Sandra's books are to read. A lot of her stories can be read as a song which makes them even more fun. Her books are a great way for young children to learn important lessons, how to get ready for bed, the different sounds animals make, and many other things.
Along with her literary achievements, Sandra has had much success in creating thousands of greeting cards and multiple children's music albums. Sandra has received the following awards: the Irma Simonton Black Award, two National Parenting Publications Gold Medals, the National Cartoonists Society Book Illustration Award, and she is the 2008 recipient of the Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Cartoonists Society's highest honor.
