china map by Mia Frishberg

By the time WW1 started, China was extremely unstable and weak due to its lack of political stability, reversed imperialism, and an obsolete military. First, political instability caused China to be weak and unstable because there was no national identity or central government in the nation. There was no national identity due to the fact that the country was split into political pieces. Civilians subscribed to a handful of different rebellions and there was no unification based on ethnicity. And, there was no central government in the nation because the Qing dynasty was rejected due to Empress CiXi's endorsement of the Boxer rebellion. Overall, these two factors culminated to cause political instability because there was no central force or union of people to enforce stability. This will probably impact out to a very messy style of battle from the Chinese since, if there's no unified central government, it would be difficult to establish a centralized military. Second, China was unstable due to its loss of territory in a time period of imperialism. With a fast growing population and frail central power, it was a horrible time for China to be losing territory and resources. China lost Vietnam and Laos to France, Hong Kong to Britain, and Taiwan to Japan. Overall, this put China in a tight squeeze because it didn't have enough resources to sustain itself. The impact of this in WW1 will probably be that Chinese soldiers won't have enough resources. Lastly, China was unstable due to a traditional, obsolete military that was far behind Western powers. With China's lack of resources, money, and central government, there wasn't a lot of means that could be used to upgrade and westernize China's military. Although attempts were made after the First Opium War, there simply wasn't enough capital in China for a lot of money to be invested in the military. This will probably impact out to a large amount of Chinese casualties in WW1 because all other countries will have much more modern technology.

This was a main trading port in the early 19th century. Many western nations came to the port to acquire coveted goods like silk, porcelain, and tea but the Chinese weren't interested in any western goods and would only accept silver. Because Britain didn't want to pay silver, they started importing opium which started the Opium War (1839-42). After the opium war, China was forced to open up all of its ports instead of only allowing trade in Guangzhou.

In the late 1830's, a man named Hong Xiuquan tried to end poverty in China by having everyone share its wealth. He gathered over 1 million followers and took over Nanjing and claimed it as their capital. This attack caused the Qing dynasty to send in their troops and call upon foreign forces to put down the Taiping rebellion and attempt to regain control. However, this revolt had already resulted in the deaths of over 20 million people.

This is why, at the end of the Opium war (1839-42), the unfair treaty between the two nations was titled the Treaty of Nanking.

The Manchu people were the dynasty behind the Qing. They were considered to be foreigners, despite identifying as Chinese. Because of the "foreign invasion" in the dynasty, rebellions like the boxer and taiping started protesting against international acceptance in China. This began a new form of nationalism; one based solely on religion and ethnicity rather than citizenship or unification.

Vietnam was a Chinese territory which was ceded to the French after a humiliating loss in the Sino-French War (1883-85). This, just like the First Opium War, disclosed the extent of how behind China's military was compared to western countries. The war ended in 1885 when China finally agreed to sign the Li-Fournier agreement in Paris. This showed how China's once powerful military was slowly declining and how they were unable to control their borders and their trade in their nation.
