2. He was elected president in 1940.
3. Then, on March 10, 1952, he seized the government in a coup d' etat, taking by force what Cuban voters were going to deny him.
4. Between 1954 and 1956 he lifted press censorship and released political prisoners, allowing exiles to return. 
5. On New Year's Eve 1958, Batista left Cuba with 180 of his closest associates and died on August 6, 1973 in Marbella, Spain, two days before a team of Castro's assassins could carry out a plan to kill him.
