2) My parents, both very successful people, do not care what job I go into as long as I am happy and i can support myself and future family. Even though I try to be like parents because they are my biggest role models, I also want to do something different and more out there. my dream is to travel the world, but to reach that dream i need to have a supporting job to get the funds i need. my parents want me to become successful and be able to live out my dream, so they are pushing me to be the best i can be. they are pushing me to be a person who is selfless and caring, and not pushing me to follow in their footsteps. I think that each child should have a mind of their own, and not be forced by outside thoughts to create an obstacle inbetween them and what they are passionate about. i think every parent should believe in their child, even if they are successful, and trust them to become great while doing something they love.

3) My biggest role models in my life are my sister, my mother, and Emma Watson. each of these people are strong independent women that are not afraid to say what they want to say even if they are going against the norm. My sister is a huge believer in womens rights, and i think that this is a topic that is very overlooked, and needs to be adressed more often. i love how my sister brings up topics like these to recognize the real problems in our world today and is able to say what she needs to say confidently. Just like my sister, i know that emma watson is a huge believer in change in our world, especially with womens rights. My mother, a the smartest and kindest woman i know, is greatly a believer in climate change and global warming. I 100% agree that if we continue our path that we are on now, we could destroy our world and everything that God has to offer. As a scientist, my mother is constantly performing and creating new ideas that could be ecofriendly and safe to our planet. In my life, I try so hard to follow in my role models lives, and at least try to be half the person they are today.

Kate Morris

Mrs. Lesnick

English 1 (8)

28 March 2019

Sonny’s family

In Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam Jr., Sonny and his family fully exhibit their arguments and love, leaving Sonny feeling out of place and also supported. Sonny and his father never got along because they did not have the same beliefs or ideas. Sonny and his father have different ideas of what they want to do in the future, and believe that both of their ideas will make them happy and successful. Sonny has always wanted to build rockets, but his father never believed in him. So one day, he built a rocket with his friend Quentin and took it outside to shoot it, and it ended with his mothers fence burning down. Homer Sr. was shocked because he did not even think Sonny was capable of that act. Homer exclaimed, “Sonny built a rocket? He doesn’t even know how to put the sprocket chain back on his bike when it slips off,” (40). Clearly Homer does not know what Sonny is capable of because he does not pay attention to him or have any interest of his ideas. Sonny feels out of place with his father because he knows that they have separate ideas of what is interesting and fun to them. Sonny thinks that they are never going to get along because Homer only likes coal mining and football, and Sonny does not care one bit about those activities. Contrary, Sonny also feels supported and welcomed by his mom Elsie. Elsie has always known that Sonny is different, but she saw this as an opportunity for him to explore his dream and also hers. When Sonny’s rocket fails, Elsie subtly encourages Sonny to keep on pursing his dream by making him feel bad about giving up. Elsie subtly expresses, “	F you give up that easy, ... I guess you are” (96). By putting calm pressure on Sonny, Elsie enforces Sonny to keep pursing his dream of building rockets and leaving Coalwood. Sonny feels his mothers pressure, and realizes that even though it does not seem like she is supporting him, she is. Sonny’s family can puts him in a situation that causes him to be skeptical of his relationships. Sonny and is parents have a love hate relationship. Sonny and his dad do not agree on most things, but sonny and his mother are always there for each other.
