It was easy for me, I loved my teachers, and it was rewarding as a student. As an adult, it provided the life I wanted: one where I could travel for more than a week if I wanted to.

I continue to be an educator primarily for job security (which sounds kind of crazy considering the budget cuts we experience in education). But in my district in Oregon, at least, I have a good salary and full benefits for both me and my husband. I've thought about making a career change a couple of times, but I don't want to lose the job security aspect. I love my students, and it would make me sad to not work with them, but I can't honestly say the love of my job is what is keeping me there. If ALL I had to do was teach, that would be amazing, but as you all know, teaching comes with so many other burdens.

I thought I'd try out teaching for a few years until I figured out what I wanted to do with my life. That was 33 years ago. I was drawn to education because I knew I'd had good experiences working with kids. I wasn't sure what else to do, really, and I wanted a job when I graduated from college. 

When I started teaching, I thought about quitting just about every day during my first year. I stuck it out thanks to amazing support from colleagues and my own stubbornness. I kept telling myself I would quit at the end of the year - I felt an obligation not to abandon my students. By the end of the year I decided to stick with it.

I liked learning and I believed that teaching was a great way of learning. I suppose I am still teaching because i want to see the result of my efforts among students. Also, since I am getting closer to retirement, why not stick around until the end. Distance Learning is quite a challenge unlike anything I've tried and so I want to see what happens in the future. Can art be taught over the internet to teenagers? I am still not sure. I actually never thought that I would be a teacher because my mom was a teacher and I saw how much she worked. As a teenager and college student, I said to myself: I do not want to be a workaholic! When I graduated from college, I realized that the work experiences I had sought out -- an environmental education practicum, volunteering at a school in Brazil, and teaching elementary school Spanish -- all had a lot to do with teaching and education! I realized that my mom was a teacher and worked hard because she believed in what she was doing, she believed it was important. So, I became a teacher because I wanted work with meaning.

I continue to be a teacher mostly because of the school where I work. I love the freedom that I have to plan lessons and design fun learning experiences, and I love the kids that I get to work with. My colleagues are alright too ;)
I also continue to believe in the power of education. There's this scene in The West Wing where they say, teachers should be paid a million dollars and live in castles (or something like that)... Ed.  

I continue to teach because I love it! I don't know a more powerful way to build relationships with children and parents that cross racial and social barriers.
