My name is Alondra, and I am a sophomore majoring in Biology. I've only had a bit of exposure to Chinese cinema; nevertheless, I really enjoyed everything I've seen thus far! I've watched a few series on Netflix and Youtube, but my favorite is Meteor Garden. It is exaggerated in every aspect and over the top dramatic, but I think those qualities are what really lures you into the storyline. Furthermore, Meteor Garden was able to create a modern twist on an overused romance tale. I was most impressed by the character of Huaze Lei. My name is Jessica and I am a freshmen. I don't really know what I'll be majoring in yet but I'm on the pre-med track. Personally, I have only watched a few Chinese films growing up such as Dragon from Shaolin, Heavenly Legend,  The Red Detachment of Women, The Witness, and Time Raiders. Ashton Chen and Steven Hao's characters in Dragon from Shaolin really was a family favorite in my household and their acting was very comedic. It was very nice to see two troubled kids use their abilities to survive on their own on the streets.  With the Red Detachment of Women, my parents told me that I would march around our home singing the main theme song as a kid. Although I haven't been watching many films, I have watched many series such as The Legend of Mi Yue, and Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils. I am very excited for this class because I grew up watching Chinese dramas but could never fully understand what goes on (this was back before English subtitles  and Netflix, haha). I mostly watched Taiwanese romcom dramas and the favorite Chinese drama I watched was "Autumn's Concerto (下一站，幸福)" which made me cry like a baby. I love the theme song and my roommate and I would sing it all the time. Recently, I watched (but not done with) this show called "Eternal Love" which is on Netflix and is a historical drama. I really like the plot because it's unique and the visuals are beautiful. (The actors are pretty good lookin too). I am late to the subject though, with a film class in senior year of high school being the catalyst of my interest. The only Chinese film I've seen is Shaolin Soccer, which I did quite enjoy when I was younger. However, it has been a long time since I saw it, so my memory is fuzzy. My favorite film genre is probably crime film. It was a visually powerful film, showing the brutality in war in its portrayal of the Nanjing Massacre. The film being shot in black and white made it feel documentary-like. In addition, I have a habit of first reading the story/fiction before watching the films as many of them are adapted from fictions.
