He’s a well-known auteur and a successful one at that since practically all his movies grossed more than $100 million. No matter what, I’ll always enjoy the Transformers series; I’ve been hooked since the first live action movie. I’ll be critiquing the first installment of the Transformers series Transformers; the elements that will be taking into account are the story development, camera shots, techniques, and angles, and the music. I know with the alien robot series, he does a lot of the same things in each of his films.

The movie begins with a narrator, who we later learn is Optimus Prime, the leader of the Autobots. Optimus talks about this object called the AllSpark. For most of the movie, there is fighting between the Autobots and the Decepticons for this AllSpark. The Autobots want to use it to rebuild their planet and to end the war, Cybertron while the Decepticons want to use it to build an army full of machines. Sam Witwicky gets involved in the conflict between the two alien robot groups when he discovers that the car he bought is one. I would say the build-up to the robots and humans fighting are crucial to the movie because they allow the audience to get a taste of what will be happening in the coming scenes. I believe the overall story is great for this to be the first installment. Every movie in the Transformers series are all based on the previous film except for Bumblebee. Michael Bay is trying to let people know that we are often too curious and risk-taking. The characters in Transformers were too curious about certain things and they frequently took many risks before any decision was made.

I noticed how there is also a buildup to the song; the music starts off soft and then precedes to get louder and grander as time pushes on. The Autobots seem to always have the triumphant music compared to the Decepticons “badass” music. The theme song “Arrival to Earth” is always in the movies, normally when the Autobots are meeting together. Suspenseful music was used when there was slight tension, one particular part where the little Decepticon was hacking into the Air Force One database. In the film, he used a lot of the medium shots, wide shots, a few close-ups, also a few establishing shots. I noticed the angles he shot the film in wasn’t out of the ordinary; meaning they were shot in a sideways manner as Spike Lee did in the Do the Right Thing. There were either a bird’s eye view or a straight angle. Majority of the film was shot in medium and wide shots. Establishing shots were whenever the alien robots were fighting; close-ups were used whenever people were talking or for instance when one of the characters was listening into the hacking the Decepticons were doing. There was panning most scenes as well which helped audiences to see the “full picture”. Bay uses three techniques in nearly all his movies: slow motion, fast-cuts, and pyrotechnics. In the Transformers films, they will always have these things included, especially the pyrotechnics and slow motion. A film without it wouldn’t give the same effect as the others.

They both use the same actor in their films and they include a strong female presence such as a roadblock, love interest or sometimes both. Bay has used Shia LaBeouf in 3 installments of Transformers and Coogler uses Michael B. Jordan. There is always either a love interest, roadblock or both in their movies as well. Michael Bay utilizes his skills to put forth a great movie a.k.a. Transformers along with the other films in the movie series.
