Setting and Time Period

Setting: This book was written from an alternate history of the United States. Germany has won World War two and turned the US into a futuristic totalitarian dystopia. The Walk starts at the Canadian border with Maine and the boys walk on US Route 1 all the way to Danvers, Massachusetts. The time period is definitely after World War two, but I would guess the 1990's. It never really states the time period.

Ray Garraty was motivated to participate in the Long Walk because of greed and the promise of glory if he won. The book never states why he wanted to sign up, but can infer it is because he wants to win the Prize.

I would recommend this book to an older audience because it is a very interesting read and I enjoyed it even though I didn't think I would. It does use a lot of language and it talks quite a bit about R rated things that definitely wouldn't be appropriate for kids. Overall, it is very well written and is very engaging.

Memorable Quote

"Some of these guys will go on walking long after the laws of biochemistry and handicapping have gone by the boards. There was a guy last year that crawled for two miles at four miles an hour after both of his feet cramped up at the same time, you remember reading about that? Look at Olson, he's worn out but he keeps going. That goddam Barkovitch is running on high-octane hate and he just keeps going and he's as fresh as a daisy. I don't think I do that. I'm not tired-not really tired-yet. But I will be." The scar stood out on the side of his haggard face as he looked ahead into the darkness. "And I think... when I get tired enough... I think I'll just sit down."
Garraty was silent, but he felt alarmed. Very alarmed. Page 110

This quote is significant because it shows just how much these boys want to live. The walk is no longer about the Prize; they just want to live. This is the moment when Garraty truly realizes what he has gotten himself into and that its very likely that he will die on the road.
