Big Move 13: Electric Cars & Fleets

I believe electric cars and fleets is an important big move for Fort Collins because currently so much of our energy use is petroleum, which emits carbon when burned. Switching to more electric vehicles could result in cleaner sources of energy being used such as wind, hydro, and solar.

-Micah

Fort Collins is currently pretty bikable currently but with the weather in Colorado it's difficult to bike year-round, so people are pretty dependent on cars. Having more public transportation options would result in less emissions.

-Hennie

In my opinion, zero-waste neighborhoods are very important for Fort Collins because recycling is important for the space in the landfill and the reuse of products. Composting is also important for the landfills, increases soil health, and promotes people keeping gardens which is also good for the environment.

-AJ Carter

I think the most important move for Fort Collins is having a community that not only supports but is involved in the creation and implementation of the plans. I feel that no move or solution will work unless you have a strong connection with the community it is effecting, as people have to buy in to these solutions. I also think that everyone should be able to see themselves within the solutions and feel as though the plan will be effective and beneficial to them and the people and environment around them.

-Currie

The idea of minimizing waste and maximize recylcing. I think that the Zero Waste Economy plan is the best move for Fort Collins, because it addresses the issues that the resources/processes bring up front by preventing the need to deal with the consequences of waste and pollution in the future. This is important because the city has a lot of people that have their needs and wants but the city still has a large area of wildlife and ecosystems in and around it. So if we can recirculate this and other resources that we use it will have a more ideal, cleaner and therefore healthier lifestyle/outcome for the wildlife and the people within the community. Both can benefit from it and have a sustainable relationship with one another.

- Cora

I think businesses in town produce more waste than all the residencies combined do because they do things on a much larger scale. If all these businesses and other industries could reduce waste, I believe that Fort Collins could greatly reduce landfill use and recycle and reuse existing items to a greater extent. Going forward, if businesses set this example, I think many people in the community would, in turn, become more conscious about the waste they produce, and their waste would be lower as well. This would help reduce emissions from production and combustion of single use materials as well as reduce trash pollution in the community.

-Lana

Big Move 12: 100% Renewable Energy

I think that this is the most important one because it will decrease our carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions. By making renewable energy affordable and reliable increases the chance that they will be used by the majority of the population. By having energy from local sources also inherently decreases greenhouse gas emissions because there is less travel and transportation needed for the energy to be moved. This idea will allow for each building in Fort Collins to be cleaner and will reduce the entire carbon footprint of our city.

-Josephine

Providing the Fort Collins community with affordable housing would benefit people by allowing them to live near places they need to visit often. An example of this would be choosing to live closer to someone's workplace or school. I also think that designing affordable housing will increase environmentally friendly building alternatives, such as light reflective panels along windows (those seen in the FOCO utility building.) Allowing everyone to live in a more "green" home affordably makes using fewer resources like electricity and water easy and widespread.

-Tanja

I think that natural spaces are one of the major reasons that people move to Fort Collins and continue to stay in Fort Collins. When we maintain the natural spaces that we have around Fort Collins and continue to make them healthy and clean, then more and more people will end up moving or visiting Fort Collins which will help it's economy. Maintaining healthy natural spaces will also keep the people here who are already here. Natural spaces are such a big part of Fort Collins' economy and social life it's important that we maintain these spaces and continue to make them places people want to go to.

-Helen

Reusing, composting, and recycling will help the environment by reducing air, water, and landfill pollution, promoting sustainability, and helping neighborhoods create long-lasting, healthier environments. Communities will benefit from zero waste neighborhoods by bringing everyone together, forming tight-knit neighborhoods, and helping people understand that we are all in this together. Fort Collins, already valuing community and sustainability, will benefit the most from zero waste neighborhoods because of the environmental and community benefits.

-Ella
