A lot of the people that were in jail for debt as low as twenty dollars had the same punishment as thief's.That was unfair to the people in debt because they had to live in the same poor conditions as the burglars but didn't really do anything just in debt. Since they didn't know much at all about the mentally ill the just threw them in prison with the others because they were mentally ill. Dorothea Dix saw this happening and she decided to create a mentally ill hospital for the mental ill. They would have certain and special care for their disability. There health and home conditions got a lot better thanks to her.
