         <description><![CDATA[Slate boards were among the earliest reusable writing tools in classrooms. Students wrote on individual slate boards with chalk, which could be wiped clean and reused. This was revolutionary for its time as it conserved paper (which was expensive) and allowed students to practice writing and arithmetic without wasting resources. Slate boards remained the primary instructional tool in classrooms throughout most of the 19th century.]]></description>

Invented by James Pillans, a Scottish teacher, the chalkboard would remain a classroom staple for over 150 years, famously leading from chalk use to the incorporation of ink-based technologies.]]></description>
