1. Choose a line(s) from either page 6, 35, or 49 that contains a poetic device (imagery, metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, alliteration, onomatopoeia) that stands out to you for any reason. Record /type the line(s) in AWE.

2. Then, underneath the line(s) in AWE, evaluate the line(s) you have chosen. What does this line(s) add to the poem/scene AND to the story overall?

This could symbolize that there is something positive or good to come in the future.
This imagery adds a clue to the overall story that moving to Alabama could be a good decision in the future. It may be a clue that no matter how dark you feel, there is always a light.

'we know you have suffered I thank you, your country thanks you.' then he cries actual tears unwiped, facing the cameras. Mother clicks her tongue: tears of an ugly fish" (Lai 35-36)

2,. This imagery caught my eye because it how what Kim Ha sees the president as. It also adds a different mood to the poem.
3. This adds to the book because it show how sthat Kim Ha and her mother feel. They know they have to leave because the president is scared. This adds to the mood.

1) "Mother clicks her tongue: Tears of an ugly fish.
I know that to mean
fake tears of a crocodile"(Lai 35-36).

2) This appealed to me because when Ha's mother sees President Thieu "crying" she immediately knows that he is faking his crying only for the cameras. This is strange to me because when a topic, such as war, should be talked about seriously. Not to make you feel sorry for the president. Instead it makes it look like your president and your country just gave up on the entire war that you have lost so much in already.

His eyes brim with tears
this time they look real.
I can no longer be your president
but I will never leave my people or our country"(Lai 49).

This imagery is telling us that President Thieu actually cares about his country and his people and doesn't want to let them go but he has to. A reader who has not read the book but just this small bit can infer that this was a really big challenge for Thieu, because he cared for the country so much.

"Mother lifts one brow, what she does when she thinks I'm lying" (Lai 49).

This imagery shows that there are certain looks people have to show that they know things. This quote is not just something that is in the book, but it is something that actually applies to real life and happens during real events. This happens a few times in the book and it gives the readers a little reality check to show that it's not just a fiction book, but a work of art that's based on real-life events.

This Imagery helps Kim Ha' know where her name comes from. Her mother tells her that her father and her gave Kim her name from the Golden River that they use to walk by. I thought that this was a good Imagery because It makes me think of a River that I a golden color because the sun Is setting.

I will offer her its first fruit" (Lai, 6+7).
2) This though is showing that Ha loves her mother, saying she will give the first fruit that her papaya tree bears is an immense compliment because that papaya tree is very very important to Ha because her family doesn't have much and she loves her papaya tree. I think this shows great love for her mother. I think it shows for the overall book that her and her mother will be very close through the hardship they are going through.

The imagery that the author provides shows that south is losing and the president doesn't want to bear the stress anymore but also doesn't want to give up. This made the rest of the book have an undertone of sadness because Ha's whole life was turned upside down soon after this because there was no president to control the country so the north invaded and took south vietnam.

This adds to the poem because right now Kim Ha and her family are in a place of war--they are still in South Vietnam, where the war is happening, and they haven't evacuated yet. They are not safe, and they know it, especially now, because of the noises they hear close to them. At the end of this part in the poem, Kim Ha knows what is about to happen--they will have to go soon, because it is too dangerous to stay.
This adds to the whole story because Kim Ha and her family are in war, and they escape on a boat to try and get out of the war. This war leads to more problems down the road for them--poverty, homelessness, and probably more, but I just haven't gotten there yet. This is really foreshadowing the war that puts them in a situation that no one wants to be in. They are about to loose their house and everything else, because the war got too close for them to be safe, which is what is being foreshadowed in this stanza.
