My aunts, uncles and cousins live in a variety of places including Fort Worth, TX and Hobbs, NM, however, the majority live in Sonora, TX. We spend every holiday together. One of the exhibits there was Mexican Art and History. One of the painting that I noticed was one of skeletons hanging from the trees. As I read the story behind the painting, it revealed that this was the time of Pancho Villa. My mother reminded me of the story of how one of my ancestors escaped his hanging during this time. My mother added that this ancestor recalled seeing people hung on almost tree as fled to the U,S Border. Our family's American lineage started after his escape.

I also never really went outside my comfort zone within Sonora because I was related to most of the population. When I went to my first school, TXST, I had the opportunity to meet and experience a wide variety of cultures. I went to bible studies at the university's Catholic parish where I not only met fellow Catholics but people from a variety of cultures and countries. It really interested me to listen to how others grew up. I actually learned how similar and different we all are. I think that applying what I learned from this experience in my classroom would make a positive impact on all my future students. Teaching students to sit back and listen to others as well as see who they truly are will create an uplifting and successful learning environment in my classroom. This is something that seems to be an issue of sorts in today's society. Many factors make it so easy to quickly judge or stereotype a person based on their outer appearance or just from the first conversation.
