Before we started the unit on the novel Lord of the Flies, I needed to find out how much students understood symbolism. I had students get into groups of no more than three and come up with a list of images and figures that had meaning in their lives, or figures they see on a daily basis. After, I had students quickly present their many drawings of images and figures. From there, we delved into symbolism.

I used this conflict worksheet to see what students understood about conflict, and how they handle conflict in their lives before reading a novel Yellow Line. This helped me see words that students knew already, or any words that may have been to hard to understand as they filled out their conflict handout. I had a lot of learners in this class that needed many visuals and had a hard time understanding certain words. Having them fill out how they handle conflict in their lives allowed them to become self aware, and allowed me to see what words were hard for them to understand

I made this booklet for students in my locally developed class to work on defining character traits, finding examples from the novel, then providing a quotation with a page number. Students used this activity to further their learning about writing a paragraph, by practicing and getting feedback from me.

I used this activity to have students reflect, and see what they understood about the novel Lord of the Flies. This activity allowed students to be creative, and practice their imagery skills that they had been learning. Students were to pick one scenario from either chapter, and draw a picture. I would give feedback to the students and and they were able to assess how much they were understanding from this assignment.

Once the students had several opportunities to practice the components of a paragraph, they were evaluated using a rubric. Students had to hand write their paragraphs, have a peer look over it, and finally type it on the computer and hand it in to be evaluated.
