Why do people eat dombre and crabs in Easter when they can enjoy this dish at anytime in the year? Do our English speaking neighbours eat the same dish?

The origin of the crab hunt goes back to slavery.
The slaves not being fed enough by their master went on a crab hunt to satisfy their hunger.
As Easter is getting near, GuTadeloupeans families hunt crabs or buy them in the super markets.
In order to prepare the traditional Easter meal, dombrés and crabs.
The crab hunt begins in February to fatten them for eating on Easter Sunday.The family meal is shared by the river or the sea, to taste them preferably with the hands.

At Easter are we eating something other than dombrés and crabs ?

Easter Sunday West Indians cook other meals as the Matété of crabs,calalou of crabs, the colombo of crabs but also accras giromon and malanga without forgetting the dombrés and crabs,which remains the least expensive and allows all families to access it.

Do we observe the same phenomenon in the English-speaking islands

In the English islands the crab is not the main Easter meal. You can find a lot of fishes, easter burns an English hot cross bun, codfish cakes eaten with local banana in Bermuda for exemple.
In Jamaïca, the easter feast is more likely to center on roasted snapper or parrot fish.

In conclusion, West Indians eat Dombré and crab at Easter because it is cheap, because it is the tradition and because it is also the season of crabs.
