June 12, 1964
  • Nelson Mandela receives a life sentence for conspiring to try and overthrow the apartheid. 






June 16, 1976
  • More than 600 black students killed at riot for better education. 
  • One of the many things that blacks were deprived of during the apartheid was a good education system. 






February 11, 1990
  • Nelson Mandela released from prison by South African president, F.W. de Klerk, due to domestic and international pressures in addition to the fear of a racial civil war. 






April 27, 1994
  • The apartheid officially ends.

May 10, 1994
  • Nelson Mandela is inaugurated as South Africa’s first black president and the first black president in a part of the world that was affected by the apartheid. 







(The whites and blacks were still on bad terms following the end of the apartheid)

June 23, 1995
  • The New Zealand All Blacks’ food is poisoned, resulting in more than half of the team falling ill within twenty-four hours of the Rugby World Cup. 






June 24, 1995
  • South Africa defeats New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg.
  • The first black president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, presented the South Africa rugby team, which consisted of whites, with their trophy. This sent a message to the nation that blacks and whites should no longer be on bad terms; integration is the future of South Africa.  
  • Following the victory, blacks and whites celebrated together on the streets of Johannesburg. 







June 14, 1999
  • Nelson Mandela’s presidency comes to an end.
