The main conflict In "The Gift of the Magi" is that Della wants to buy a gift for Jim but she only has $1.87. This is an example of a man vs. world conflict because low paying jobs have caused Della to not have much money so now she must find a way to make some. "One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas" (Henry).

Della-selfless
Della puts on a strong display of selflessness throughout the story. She never thinks about herself or her own desires, she is completely devoted to giving Jim everything she believes he deserves. She goes on to sell away her beautiful hair for Jim, and her only worry is that his outlook towards her would change. She cares tremendously about her husband. "Many a happy hour she had spent planning for something nice for him" (Henry). Despite her plans, she does not have enough money to provide anything nice for Jim. Oh, and the next two hours seemed to fly. "She was going from one shop to another, to find a gift for Jim " (Henry). Della spends hours of her own time to find a gift to Jim. This displays her devotion and love towards him. "'Cut it off and sold it,” said Della. “Don’t you like me now? I’m me, Jim. I’m the same without my hair'" (Henry). Instead of being proud of herself for buying Jim a gift, Della still only cares about Jim's feelings. Della shows that she is extremely selfless throughout the story.

Imagery- The author describes the appearance of characters, objects, and settings throughout the story. " Her eyes were shining brilliantly, but her face had lost its color within twenty seconds. Rapidly she pulled down her hair and let it fall to its full length" (Henry). The author uses imagery to show the stress Della is withstanding due to her inability to purchase a good gift for Jim. The usage of imagery also allows the reader to begin to understand the meaningfulness of Della's hair. "So now Della’s beautiful hair fell about her rippling and shining like a cascade of brown waters" (Henry). The author uses imagery to display the value of certain objects in the story. "It was a platinum fob chain simple and chaste in design, properly proclaiming its value by substance alone and not by meretricious ornamentation—as all good things should do" (Henry). The reader knows how important this gift is due to the way it is described through Della's eyes. Imagery has a powerful impact on the description of characters and objects in "The Gift of the Magi".
