When the sun was first formed, dust and other solar material was dispersed around it. Gravity pulled this material together to form small rocks, which were eventually pulled together to form larger rocks, and then planets. Earth was one of about 100 planets formed during this time. The surface of the planet was around 1200 degrees Celsius and consisted of molten rock.

While the Earth was forming, so were many other planets such as Theia. Theia was about the size of Mars and was pulled in by the Earth's gravity. This collision caused large amounts of molten rock to escape from both planets and to form what we now call the moon.

The Earth eventually began to cool as the molten rock formed into solid rock on the surface. This formed a crust. However, the center/core of the Earth was still made up of molten rock.

After the planet began to cool, its large gravitational mass began to pull other small objects into it. These meteorites began to collide with Earth. Each rock contained a small amount of water. After about 20 million years of this heavy bombardment, bodies of water began to form on the Earth's now cooled crust.

As the Earth began to fully cool and bodies of water began to form, layers in the Earth began to form as well. The immense pressure that was forced onto the core of the Earth made sure it stayed completely solid. The outer core never fully cooled and is still made of molten lava. The crust is fully cooled and is what we live on now.
