Stonesinger - Verdancy

Some of the kids her age had amazing powers such as moving stones from one point to another, moving the very land they walked on, creating artistry and buildings from wood. For a curious child who only wanted to wield what she found amazing at that time, she didn't think her power was something important, nor did she want it. She tried so hard to hide it, hoping another would manifest in its place.

But as she grew older, she learned to control it, to enrich it, to make it grow. More often than not, she uses it to help their people. To grow crops, to grow fruits, to grow plants and trees that can be used by those with arborcrafts, to help enrich the same soil and ground those with terrakinesis have domain over. She learned all of their magick are connected and all are important in their own way, even the Deepcallers.

Fact: Eryanna can only use her ability through singing. She can make things grow all at once in her surrounding area—4 meter radius—in an amount of time, depending on what it is that are near her. Although her ability is strong, her throat hurts far too easily when she sings, which counts as her weakness.

[Triggerwarning - mention of death]

Cries had been heard at the stroke of midnight, both from the Queen and a small baby girl. Born on the last day of Umbrosar in the year 1476. She was small, barely the size of her mother's arm, having difficulty breathing. Her constitution was weak, and she was said to pass even before the year ends- no, even before the month of Thalos ends. It was for that reason, the first 2 weeks, she was not given a name, only called the youngest child of King Zarhwan and Queen Myrrkae.

The first month was brutal. She was looked after by her wet nurse while her parents barely checked on her, afraid of getting too close in case she passed away too soon. But deep in the night—they couldn't help it—they would check on her, Queen Myrrkae crying in her husband's arms, praying to the goddess to have pity on their youngest's little soul while King Zarhwan soothed his dear wife as best as he could. Everyday, they worried, and everyday felt like they had to walk on eggshells.

But she grew, more and more. She grew stronger, healthier, and bigger. And just like that, the year had passed, and she was given a name on the first day of Rekindra, year 1477. Eryanna.

From a very young age, Erynna learned that aggression should be repaid with kindness and that hurt should be returned with forgiveness. Words can hurt, whether they are directed at others or oneself, which is why silence is sacred. She didn't start that way though.

Eryanna wasn't always as gentle as she is known today. She used to be rowdy, far from quiet, and was quite vengeful. When she broke something by accident, she lied. She never felt remorse until she saw those around her being blamed for her doings, to which she would eventually confess. She was known as the troublemaker. A selfish little girl that laughed as if the world belonged to her. The kind of kid that felt free despite the hardships those around her faced. She was naive.

In her childhood, she met a friend. A friend who taught her the wonders of Galaneth's principles, teachings, and morals. At first, none of it meant anything. She simply liked her friend's company, liked being near them, liked being in their presence. If they sat on a random rock, so did she. If they closed their eyes, so did she—but not before taking a quick peek and following whatever it is their friend does. If they prayed to their goddess for forgiveness and for peace, so did she. She never really understood why this friend of hers was so devout, but there must have been a reason.

Her mother never really knew what to do with her, always getting into conflicts, into trouble. Instead of remaining quiet when confronted, she shouted back. It wasn't their way, it wasn't what Edornians do, but it was what Eryanna does.

Everything changed when her friend's life was suddenly taken. Children weren't allowed to stray far, to go to the surface, away from the tunnels. Her friend begged her to come back, to follow the rules, to go back to where it was safe. Eryanna was stubborn and did only what she wanted, saying nothing would happen, it'd be their little secret. Those were the words she had come to regret.

Why did she think she knew better? Why didn't she listen? Why didn't she realize it sooner?

It was from that moment that she promised to uphold everything she was taught, not by her parents, her mentors, those around her, but by her friend, whom she cherished more than the goddess herself.

She had grown quiet, almost to the point of silence. Her once disorderly nature, suppressed—for the better, she thought. Maybe if she had done everything she was told, no more bad things could happen. Maybe if she had prayed hard to Galaneth, served her with her life, honoured her with everything she had, maybe, just maybe, her friend would be brought back. The second princess followed in her mother's footsteps, being as gentle, as forgiving, and as peace-loving as she could.

She once believed violence should be rewarded with violence far more brutal, but the Eryanna now believes otherwise. If she was greeted with aggression, she met them head-on with silence. If she was betrayed, she forgave. If she was disturbed by wars, she offered peace. She grew to be the exact opposite of her younger self and continued to walk the path her mother walks, in hopes of reaching where she stands—and deep in her heart, hoped for peace not just for their people or family, but for those who couldn't even defend themselves.

Naivety and guilt are probably the two worst combination to describe a person, but underneath the gentle and kind persona, she is made up of the the said combination. Consumed by guilt, Eryanna's thoughts revolve around what might have been. Her choices and decisions are often thought out, depending on the different outcomes she could think of.

Forgiveness is their virtue, but she can't forgive herself. Peace is the way, but she couldn't attain it.

In addition, her once curious mind is now locked away, replaced by caution and avoidance. No matter how much justice she wanted for their people, to fight for them just like her siblings, she had promised to uphold the teachings of Galaneth. Safety and security is what the people need, not taking back what was originally theirs—at least not now, as powerless as they are. Staying underground is safe, staying away from conflict even more so.

Her mind is filled with worry. She overthinks the slightest things, but her face manages to hide how she truly feels while her words are able to calm others down, as ironic as that was.

It was in her gaze. The way that she stared. The longing in her eyes. The depth of emotions as she looked at him—for him—from every angle, in every part of any room.

It was in the quiet air between them. The soft steps they made as she matched his pace, making sure they were on equal footing, side by side, as they wandered the halls.

It was in the brief touches. The way she gripped a little more tightly as he helped her up from where she sat. Her touch, lingering a bit longer just before pulling away.

It was the way that he smelled. She knew his scent and knew when he's close by, wanting to be enveloped by it- by him. The warmth that radiated through her from the fragrance he exuded.

It was in every little encounter with him, the way she acted, the way she responded. The way her voice sounded far more gentle when she talked to him. The way her ears perked ever so slightly when he spoke. The way her breath hitched when he called her name.

It was only he who made her react in such a way.

The man that was so near yet so far. If she could just reach out, if she could just voice it out, if she could just go beyond the line she had drawn with all her might. If she could just be honest, if she could just be selfish-

No. She can't. As if a mental hand pulled back, retreating into the shadows and locking itself up in darkness. Her thoughts about him, her feelings about him, all locked up. Eryanna couldn't waver, she couldn't stray, she made it this far—following all of Galaneth's teaching in every possible way—she wasn't going to throw it all now.

Yes. This was for the best. From behind, she could watch him. From the sidelines, she could truly see him. She doesn't need to stand in front of him. She doesn't need to be honest. She doesn't need to tell him anything. This was peace. Thorne is her peace. The same peace she had tried so long to attain—hoped for, wished for, prayed for. Loving him from afar is peace, after all, he deserved better, and she needed to do better to serve Galaneth.

But as she stood in the middle of the field, a meadow somewhere on the surface, white flowers all bundled in one arm, she stared. The kind of look that made you feel noticed, well thought of, loved. She memorized how he moved and how he looked. His hair, his eyes, his nose, his lips, his stature. The way he gathered flowers yet to blossom and flowers that were in full bloom. The way he breathed, the way he moved from one area to the next—everything she can, really. From that distance, she watched. From that distance, she stayed From that distance, she loved. From that distance, she confessed in her head. A quiet confession that only she and Galaneth knew. Their little secret.

"Thorne." Her voice was soft as she called out to him, waiting patiently as he looked up at her in from where she stood.

"I think our goddess would appreciate this much." She gestured to the flowers in her arm, a small smile on her lips. "We should only take what we need, never what we—" she took a deep breath and let out a shaky sigh along with the last word as she gazed into his eyes from that distance "—want."

If someone asked what her weakness was, she would say Galaneth, in a heartbeat. She was her devoted subject. She would do anything for her, be everything for her, even someone she isn't. All for the love and mercy of Galaneth.

But if someone actually saw how Eryanna was as a person, as herself, her weakness is love. As lame as that sounded to many people, but she would do anything for those she cherished, for those she cared for, for those she loves. Yes, loves, never loved.

Their family knew the tension between her and her older sister, Velitaeh. Opposing ideals, beliefs, values. They were basically two side of the same coin, often clashing—in a calm way but the tone is set from the way they talked. They were molded from different core, still, she sees her as her hero, her idol, no matter what she made herself believe.

Even when her magick was revealed—a deepcaller, going against the teachings of Galaneth—her eyes looked as if she scrutinized her, as if she judged her, as if she wasn't made in the image of what their goddess portrayed, that may be true, but their was depth in them. Her gaze was sharp but her eyes didn't contain judgement. It was filled with wonder, curiosity, and most importantly, worry.

What if she gets hurt? What if she suffers in the long run? What if something much crueler than death awaited her?

Her mind was in shambles, only thinking about what was to come of Velitaeh, her precious sister. The one who she should have truly resonated with, but chose to stray from due to their differences.

They say regret is something you experience in the end. And although they were still in the middle of their lives, barely even living—truly living—Eryanna experienced it. Every single day, as she sees her sister, she can't help but look back and wonder where it all went wrong.

Why did she choose such a path that led her astray to her? Why did she decide on following her mother? Why did she think she needed to pick a side in the first place?

They were siblings. They had the same mother and father. They had the same upbringing. They lived under the same roof. They had the same home. At least that's what she thought. A naive and selfish thought indeed.

And as she stood in front of Velitaeh's door—with nothing in particular to say or do—she contemplated. What difference did it make to try and get close now? They still have their own beliefs which would make them clash in the long run. They still would decide to go their separate ways to obtain what they think would be right for them and for the people of Edrathin. They still would have fought on opposing sides.

But deep down. Deep, deep down in that little heart of hers, Eryanna knew she would always choose them. Choose her siblings. Choose her. Velitaeh.

With that, her hand that raised, about to knock, slowly lowered before she walked away, never looking back.

Their goddess is a merciful and peaceful goddess. Albeit asleep, her teachings will forever live with her people.

When someone asks about Galaneth, they often describe her as a beautiful woman, surrounded by greenery and full of life. Some see her as an ethereal being, life itself in the form of a woman. People associated goddesses with women, but it was different for Eryanna.

Galaneth is peaceful, like a stream that travels from the mountains to the valleys. Galaneth is forgiving, like a tall tree withstanding strong winds and rain. No matter how hurt she is, she'll forgive. Galaneth is beautiful inside and out, as if her worshipers have seen her. Have they really seen her though? Their response to such a question is simple. She's seen in nature. She is nature, and everything they see is beautiful, which makes her beautiful.

She understood. All her life, she listened, and she agreed with some to an extent, because she had different thoughts about their goddess.

If people asked her how she would describe Galaneth, her response would be "Galaneth is like Veritas."

Was it blasphemous to compare Galaneth to him? Why him? Why her eldest brother? It could have been anyone, really. Hell, it should have been her mother—the woman who followed her teachings religiously—right?

In Eryanna's head, he was the kind of person anyone could rely on. The kind that spoke well. The kind that kept the peace. That's how she saw him, how she sees him, and how she will continue to see him. Still, in her world, there was more to that- he was more than that. He was a little sprout—the sign of life—in a barren land. An oasis in the desert. Rain in dry land. He was the epitome of hope—their people's hope, their family's hope, and as selfish as it may be, her hope. Being the voice of the rebellion, he is hope.

Of course, she never really spoke about it out loud, not because she didn't want to let people know about her thoughts—maybe to some extent, it was true—but because she didn't want to let Veritas hear about them. She didn't want to burden him further, place such responsibilities on his shoulders. It was unfair. In addition, he made her see their views, their beliefs, and as difficult it was to admit, he was right. Still, she wasn't going to say anything, she wasn't going to admit anything, she wasn't going to do anything. Instead, she was going to watch from afar, like she always did.

And so she stood from the sides, watching and cheering quietly. Galaneth could forgive her for hoping Veritas succeeds, right? Galaneth could forgive her for rooting for her siblings, right? Galaneth could forgive her for praying for her family's happiness, for their people's freedom, right? If being kept 6 feet under was peace in its own way, it made her wonder why she wasn't all too happy nor at peace with it. Was this really what peace felt like?

Her gaze wandered over to her siblings, one by one, from where she stood, trying to stay as far as possible. Kieren, Velitaeh, and finally Veritas. The longer she looked, the more longing she felt. The more she stayed, the harder it would be along the way. Yes, she had talked to Veritas until now, but their words were more reserved while their actions were even more hesitant. And so, she left, each stride harder and heavier as memories weighed her down.

First step, memories of them singing together. Second step, memories of them growing flowers together. Third step, memories of them laughing together. And every succeeding step after that, all their memories of them together.

How could something that you can't physically see be this heavy? Still, she continued and made sure not to hesitate the next time around.

With each step he takes, she follows with half before looking at him once again, as if wondering what his next move would be. If he goes right, so did she. If he jumped, then came a little thump from behind him. If he crawled into little spaces, expect a smaller child following suit. Whatever Kieran did, Eryanna did too. She trusted him that much. She idolized him that much. She relied on him that much.

Little Eryanna can't help but follow her instincts. What instincts? Following her older brother. He was closest to her in age—as if her other siblings were much older—and he was the one she often saw. When she saw him, her whole face lights up, instantly followed by a high-pitched voice calling out to him, and ending with a big wave that made her whole body sway. It was something normal for her, something natural that came to her. Soon, she was behind him, trolling about to wherever his feet took them.

But, when did she stop following? When did it all start to go downhill? When did she decide all this?

Over time, her steps turned smaller, halved even further until it just stopped. Fully. She stayed back as he moved forward. Watching from behind as their gap widened.

From once being so close—almost being his shadow, doing everything he did—she now had become a spectator in his life. It wasn't very often though. She only watched when she could. When their paths permitted her to.

Her gaze always seemed to wander over to him, watching in curiosity. She wondered what he was up to, what he was doing for the day, and before she could even ask, she manages to stop herself. Kieran wouldn't miss her. She convinced herself that a hundred- a thousand times, when she feels herself wavering.

He doesn't need a constant annoyance in his life. He doesn't need someone following him everywhere he went. He doesn't need someone asking him what kind of plant this was. He doesn't need someone who asks him to wait as she follows along when she was clearly unwanted in that situation. He doesn't need her.

It was the kind of epiphany that happened at the worst of times—for her, at least. She shut them all out, no one knew why. She changed over night, no one knew the reason. Her smile that was once carefree turned into something of a formality, no one asked her why. Kieran did. She had no clue when it started but he worried about her, about the same yet different sister that seemed more hesitant than before, about the Eryanna that pulled away. Time and time again, he asked. Time and time again, she pulled away.

Maybe Kieran knew that, maybe he realized something was amiss. But she kept a distance, before he could even question her. Once at arm's length, now a gorge in between. Eryanna made sure it grew bigger. The farther they were, the farther he was, the better. It wasn't because she cared so little. In fact, it was the opposite. She cared deeply. All her emotions were always deep, especially for her family.

And now, although she wanted to follow, to take a step in the direction he did, she felt a sense of reluctance. The kind that didn't stem from lack of trust, but the kind that made her ask why she thinks he needs her in his life. The kind of reluctance that made her cautious with him. The kind of reluctance that made her wary of the situation she created between them.

What was she doing there now? A couple of steps away from him near the entrance of the tunnels—a few feet that felt like a journey of a thousand miles. They did say it began with a single step. Now she wondered, although it was, although it took long, should she take a step towards him or away?
