• Horse flies: These flies thrive in sunny, open areas like beaches and are known to inflict painful bites.

• Chigoe fleas: Also known as jiggers or "true" sand fleas, these parasitic insects can burrow into the skin. While often found in the tropics, they can be blown to beaches in other regions. 

Burrowing insects and marine life

Some creatures either burrow into the sand to avoid wind and waves or are at the mercy of the wind's direction.

• Blood worms: These marine worms have sharp jaws and are found in the sand, often in tidal areas where they can be a nuisance to those digging.

• "By-the-wind sailors" (Velella velella): These aren't insects but hydrozoans related to jellyfish. They use a built-in sail to drift with the wind, but strong winds can cause millions of them to wash ashore. 

Why are mosquitoes less common?

Strong, consistent winds over open water disrupt the surface and create waves. Mosquitoes need still, stagnant water to lay their eggs, so they generally do not live in or around open beaches. However, if there is a nearby sheltered area with standing water, they can still be present on a beach. 

Decomposers

These insects break down organic material, recycling nutrients back into the forest soil. 

• Termites: These social insects consume dead wood, which helps aerate the soil and contributes to the nutrient cycle.

• Rhinoceros beetle larvae: The large, grub-like larvae of these beetles feed on decomposing organic material, including rotting wood and leaf litter.

• Fly maggots: The larvae of many fly species, including blow flies, help break down decaying organic matter, such as dead animals and other waste.

• Millipedes: These arthropods, while not technically insects, are commonly found in leaf litter, where they feed on decaying plant material, moss, and fungi.

• Springtails: As one of the most abundant groups in leaf litter, springtails primarily eat fallen leaves, detritus, algae, and fungi. 

Predators

These insects hunt and feed on other small invertebrates in the forest litter. 

• Rove beetles: Often found in or near decaying organic material, these elongated beetles are quick-moving predators that feed on other insects and maggots.

• Ants: Many ant species build nests in or under the litter layer and are effective predators of other insects, including caterpillars that fall from the canopy.

• Centipedes: These carnivorous myriapods hunt for small insects and other invertebrates at night. Some species lay their eggs directly in the leaf litter. 

Overwintering and shelter

Many insects rely on the insulating properties of forest litter for protection during colder months. 

• Butterflies and moths: Many species, such as the luna moth, eastern tiger swallowtail, and great spangled fritillary, overwinter as pupae or caterpillars in fallen leaves.

• Native bees: Species such as the pure gold-green sweat bee and certain carpenter bees use decaying wood, hollow stems, and the leaf litter itself to create burrows for overwintering.

• Stick insects: The eggs of these insects are often dropped from treetops and overwinter in the leaf litter, sometimes camouflaged to look like seeds.

• Fireflies: These beetles hide in the leaf litter as larvae or adults to escape the cold. 

Tree-dwelling insects

These insects may spend part of their life cycle in the leaf litter or on the forest floor, but they primarily live on the trees. 

• Bark beetles: These insects live in the bark of trees and will be found in fallen branches and logs as the tree decays.

• Emerald ash borer: An invasive species, the larvae of this beetle feed under the bark of ash trees, but the adults can be found on the forest floor.

• Eastern tent caterpillar: Caterpillars of this species feed on tree leaves but may use leaf litter for shelter. 

True Cave-Dwellers (Troglobites)

These are species that cannot survive outside a cave environment. 

• Cave Beetles:

  Many species of beetles, such as members of the Carabidae and Staphylinidae families, are true cave-dwellers. 

• Diplurans:

  These pale, eyeless, silverfish-looking insects have long tails called cerci, which they use to navigate in darkness. 

• Zygentoma:

  Some species of the ancient order Zygentoma (which includes silverfish and bristletails) are adapted to cave life. 

General Cave Inhabitants (Troglophiles)

These species spend part of their lives in caves but can also survive elsewhere. 

• Cave Crickets:

  Also known as camel crickets, these humpbacked insects have long antennae to feel their way in the dark and are common in damp, dark areas like caves and basements.

• Ice Bugs:

  A small order of ancient, primitive insects called Grylloblattodea, they are found in caves where temperatures are very low. 

Temporary Cave Visitors (Trogloxenes)

These creatures use caves for shelter but cannot live there permanently. 

• Caddisfly Larvae and Mayfly Nymphs:

  Nymphs of caddisflies and mayflies can be washed into caves by underground streams and survive if there is enough food.

• Adult Caddisflies:

  Some adult caddisflies may use the cave threshold as a resting place for part of the summer.

• Water Scorpions and Water Boatmen (Order Hemiptera):

  These "true bugs" have an underwater lifestyle as adults, with water boatmen and water scorpions known to live in ponds. 

• Mayflies (Order Ephemeroptera):

  The nymphs (immature stages) of mayflies require clean, flowing water and have specialized adaptations, such as three tail filaments. 

• Fly Larvae (Order Diptera):

  This group includes larvae like bloodworms (midges) and rat-tailed maggots, which can survive in low-oxygen, stagnant water. 

• Caddisflies (Order Trichoptera):

  The larvae of caddisflies build protective cases and are often found in freshwater habitats. 

Specialized Cold-Weather Insects

• Ice Crawlers (Grylloblattidae):

  These wingless, extremophile insects are also called "rock crawlers" and are found on mountaintops and glacier edges, thriving in extreme cold. 

• Snow Fleas (Springtails):

  These small, ancient insects are active in the snow and can withstand freezing temperatures by eating decaying organic matter. 

• Snow Scorpionflies:

  These bizarre, wingless insects have long legs and are active in winter conditions, like snow scorpionflies. 

• Snowflies:

  Related to craneflies, these long-legged, dark-colored flies have freeze-resistant blood and are adapted to cold environments.

• Stoneflies:

  Their nymphs live in cold mountain streams, growing all winter to emerge as adults in the spring.

• Red Flat Bark Beetle Larvae:

  The larvae of this Alaskan beetle are known to survive even at extremely low temperatures, as low as -80°C (-112°F), according to Guinness World Records.

Common Creatures Found Under Rocks

• Ground Beetles: These are predators of garden pests and often hide under rocks when resting or to survive the winter.

Insects Found in Fallen Logs
