The important leaders of the New Jersey colony were Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret.

The founders of the New Jersey colony were Henry Hudson. Henry found New Jersey after sailing through Newark Bay in 1609. Hudson hoped to discover a "northwest passage," that would allow a ship to cross the entirety of the North American continent and gain access to the Pacific Ocean, and from there, India. After arriving off the coast of Cape Cod, Hudson eventually sailed into the mouth of a large river, today called the Hudson River.

By 1775 New Jersey was governed as a Royal Colony. The New Jersey colony has a Representative government. This means that citizens had the opportunity to take part in the colony’s major decisions by electing representatives to represent them.

The geography and climate contribute to the development of the colony because the soil is fertile, the soil being fertile makes it easier to grow crops. For this reason the community was able to grow stronger and expand. During the summer it is not too hot and in the winter is not too cold, which was better for the colony to develop.

An economic advantage that the geography gives to New Jersey colonies is that the soil is very fertile making them have more opportunities to grow more crops and trade.

- The New Jersey colonists had a hostile relationship with the Native Americans living there, the Lenni Lenape. When the Dutch colonists first came, a strained relationship was made, and no harm had been inflicted upon the Lenni Lenape. Since the Native Americans knew the land as well as they knew the back of their hands, they had an ideal trading relationship with the colonists.

Later on, The Dutch forced the innocent Lenni Lenape on barren and desolate reservations. February 25,
1643 became a turning point in the amount of trust encumbered in the colonists when Dutch soldiers invaded the Lenni Lenape village and killed hundreds of men, women, and children.
