A Short Overview

In Chapter six of Ratliff's book "Every Song Ever" he discusses the idea of a single note as the melody. He claims that this idea, of having a single note as the focal point while the music behind changed was a direct reflection of the artist. Ratliff compares it to a poem about the artist, describing "the world around him changing rapidly, while he says the same, a single note over and over". He asserts that the single note is stubborn, and it makes a point. It makes the audience rally listen, it draws them in and can make the music more alive. Although it can be a risk, because it can be difficult to listen to as the audience. They expect either resistance or play. It is its own phenomenon. That the idea of a tonic note is almost like a home address, that it can bring comfort to the reader as it stays or comes back to this stubborn note.

The Stubborn Note

Ratliff claims that " the stubborn note is bossy; it takes you over. It puts you on notice. It is a marker, a reminder; wake up, get free of your momentum, you have somewhere ti be right now" This assertion relates to his over all theme and opinion of the tonic, single note. It shows that which the stubborn note is risky, and to some unpleasant and difficult to listen to, it has a purpose. It adds to the music, and takes control of the listener.

I do agree with Ratliff, I think that while it can be difficult to listen to, it adds to the music. It is personal showing stagnation as the world around changes.

In "Furthest Thing" by Drake that line is personal, it represents the person, the will. That line demanded attention. He is saying that he hasn't this girl in a while and now he is thinking it might be too late because she is thinking things might be different, this is a line that was important and he wanted heard.

In "Wat's Wrong" but Isaiah Rashad, Kendrick Lamar's feature has an example of the single note. The line says "Maybe if I could live hundred years that be real?" This is a reference to something he had said on his own song "Real", in which he discus his father saying real isn't living to 100, having money and respect, or killing people. Real is responsibility. "Real is taking care of your family. Real is God". This line was present with one note in order to draw to its importance and its allusion to a different one of his songs.
