In Every Song Ever by Ben Ratliff, transmission is defined as how a song makes the listener feel as a result of their delivery. Transmission is an important part in music because if the song is able to transmit a desired kind of feeling to the listener, then that would mean the song was successful. In the chapter Ratliff discusses the relationship between the emotion that comes from a song and the song itself. Regardless of the correlation, I believe to the average listener it doesn't really matter the process on how the feeling was created. What listeners care about is the particular feeling that produced in them by the song. In the end transmission is important because it allows the audience to connect with the music more effectively. If a listener feels that they are able to identify with a song, then that is a sign a good song was made.

This helps to explain transmission because when an artist surprises you while listening to a song, then that is when that artist has given you more then what you thought you'd receive. At that point you have a feeling inside of you as an effect when all you simplistically need from a song is a sound with rhythm.

Julia by The Beatles (John Lennon)

Because this song was dedicated towards someone, it carries a message for who it was dedicated to. John Lennon composed this song to express his actual feelings he had not expressed because of how his life played out. The melodic guitar allows for emotion to be portrayed as well as the tone he keeps throughout the song. It's evident that he wants to show love/appraisal towards Julia and leaves the listener with that same emotion but maybe not towards the same person.

I chose this song because what X (short for Xxxtentacion) is trying to convey is pain. In his case, the pain comes from someone he knew committing suicide. Once you know why this song was written and you listen to his lyrics it creates a sad emotion whether it is for the same reason he's feeling pain for or not. Musical elements like the tempo and the harmony created at the beginning of the song also contribute to the sadness that is transmitted.

"It is a basic measure of emotional intelligence to be able to read those symbols, either from the music itself alone..or some kind of chatter around it.." Ben Ratliff

Being able to determine whether a song has a sad, angry, or happy emotion shows transmission is relevant when listening to a song. He describes this a "basic measure" because reacting to transmission is a very common thing to do. So much that its basic to be able to determine the feeling portrayed.
