Writing started as pictures called pictographs which were pictures that recorded information. Eventually, the Sumerian Scribes  simplified the pictographs to symbols. Later on, they used the symbols as a language. They developed symbols for every syllable in their language. Next, they developed an alphabet, by combining these symbols in different ways. Around 3500 B.C scribes in Sumer were developed by pressing into pieces of clay. The scribes started the writing language called cuneiform. Cuneiform was thought to be the first writing language .
