How nurseries may actively promote equality:

Some nurseries may use the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child Act that was brought about in 1989. As well as this, the Human rights Act 1998 may be incorporated with this act to form a basis of how equality may be visible within this particular health and social care setting. Many aims will be put in place in order for individual nurseries to combat all forms of prejudice behaviour and eliminate all forms of unfair discrimination. No service user or health care professional should receive favourable treatment as a direct results of their gender, age, race, disability etc. It is important that all children should have the opportunity to experience a challenging and enjoyable programme of learning and development. Nurseries will ensure they promote multi-cultural and special needs education through toys, equipment and health care professionals active awareness of opportunities which will support and extend children's experiences. Concepts that are common to all cultures will be valued and encouraged, such as language. It is important that children develop a positive attitude to differences that arise from around the world and different cultures.

All children will be encouraged to mingle with one another and become involved in all activities that promote team work as this will give them the chance to work with variations of children. To summarise, by treating everyone the same and allowing them all to possess the same opportunities by adapting activities so all can participate will ensure everyone feels welcome and bring about a consideration of equality.

Doctors have to demonstrate equality by treating all their patients in the same manner and with an equal amount of respect. All types of illness have to be treated in the same way and a patient should never be looked as any worse or less important than another patient. This can be shown through the differences of mental and physical health illnesses. Both illnesses can be very severe and should be viewed as being equal to each other. It is important for a doctor to be non-judgmental about an illness, as this would put the patient at ease and not feel as though the doctor is looking down on them. A doctor should also aim to have a good relationship with all patients, to make one feel more comfortable about expressing their concerns and worries of the illness.

Staff training will help health care professionals from all forms of health care settings to learn key skills they must acquire in promoting equality to all service users. Through this method of training staff members will learn why equality is needed for the care of a particular service user and begin to understand why it's important. It will become the background knowledge and the basis of most acts carried out when dealing with a service user. By gaining experience, staff members are then able to put this knowledge into practise and demonstrate the basic ways of showing equality in action.
