Confederate guerrilla, bank robber, gang leader and murderer. Born on September 5, 1847, in Kearney, Missouri, Jesse Woodson James belonged to a prestigious farming family. Their father, Reverend Robert James, was a Baptist minister.

In 1850 Reverend James passed away and the family became destitute.

During the Civil War, Frank joined the Confederate guerrillas (or “Bushwhackers”). In May 1863, 16-year-old Jesse and his stepfather were ambushed at the family farm by Union militiamen looking for Frank and his group. Reuben Samuel was tortured (they briefly hung him from a tree) and Jesse – reportedly – was lashed. Later that year, Jesse also turned guerrilla, and he and Frank joined “Bloody Bill” Anderson’s gang, taking part in the killing and mutilation of scores of Union soldiers. In May 1865, near the end of the civil war, Jesse was shot in the chest by Union cavalry near Lexington, Missouri. His first cousin Zerelda Mimms – his future wife – nursed him back to health from his near-fatal injury.

After the Civil War had ended, Jesse, Frank and other surviving Bushwhackers, formed the James-Younger Gang. Jesse reached celebrity status in 1869, after he murdered a cashier during a Gallatin bank raid, wrongly believing him to be Samuel Cox, the Union commander who had killed Bloody Bill in 1864. The press labelled Jesse an “outlaw” for the first time and the state governor offered rewards for the James brothers’ capture. At the same time, the gang members were hailed by many Missourians, as heroes furthering the Confederate cause. John Newman Edwards, an influential news editor, took up Jesse’s cause. Through his collective press coverage, including letters Jesse wrote to the paper himself, the Robin Hood myth was born.n 1874, the Pinkerton National Detective Agency was hired to hunt Jesse’s gang. The attack prompted outrage, heightening public support for the James brothers; so much so, a bill was nearly passed offering them amnesty. Jesse and Frank launched a revenge campaign against neighbours who had assisted the raid, and it is believed one man was killed in retribution. In the fallout, Pinkerton abandoned his manhunt. On April 3, 1882, Jesse James was dusting a picture on the wall in his rented home, when Bob shot him in the back of the head.

The General Custer from his full name George Armstrong Custer is an American cavalry general. Born on December 5, 1839, in Ohio, the general Custer is famous for his exploits during the War of Secession. He is one of the leading American emblematic figure of Indian wars. He was killed on June, 25, 1876, in Montana, during the battle of Little Bighorn during which his troops were crushed by a coalition of Indian tribes. Very young, this last sends a letter to the representative of his State, to join the famous military academy "the West point".
He was known to be bold, ambitious and reckless. It was in 1863 that he was promoted to general. Custer is to date the youngest officer serving as a Major General in the history of the US Army. Newspapers glorify his image, it is thanks to this that he is known to all. However, it aims to steal the territory occupied by the Indians to get rich and install a railway line. He also wanted to find gold. Unfortunately, he is infamous for shooting down many Indians from a mooving train.
Dersy Alexandra

William Henry McCarty better known as "Billy the Kid", would have been born November 23, 1859 in New York but this is uncertain. He died on July 14, 1881 at Fort Sumner shot by Lincolm County Sheriff Pat Garrett. His childhood is very vague and uncertain. Before being one of the best-known bandi, he held a small job and was turned to petty crime. When he was 18, he became part of a gang called "The Boys" after killing his first man. He was one of the biggest bandi and murderer of the 19th century, he would have killed 21 men but in reality it would be 9. He worked for a young English entrepreneur John Tunstall until he was shot by the sheriff's band William.J.Brandy. The men of Tunstall decide to avenge this and create the band of "Regulators" which will mark the beginning of the "Lincoln count war". Billy was arrested and tried for all these murders, and managed to escape but was killed by the sheriff at the age of 21. Billy is a sybole of Americain West because he was a very big criminal but also thanks to Pat Garret's popular book "The Authentic Life of Billy the Kid".
ARAGON Camille et BLAS Valentine

Red Cloud, the Oglala Lakota leader, spearheaded its defence from 1866 to 1868. Sitting Bull played an active role in “Red Cloud’s War”, leading several war parties and mounting guerrilla attacks.

In 1868, Red Cloud signed the Treaty of Fort Laramie with the US, agreeing to live on a reservation. Sitting Bull defied the treaty and continued fighting, drawing large swaths of followers – not only Sioux but also Cheyenne and Arapaho.

In 1930, surviving Hunkpapa tribesmen interviewed, claimed Sitting Bull became “Supreme Chief of the Whole Sioux Nation” in 1869. Later historians have argued the Sioux’s decentralised nature made this impossible but accepted Sitting Bull inspired unified, intertribal support as had never seen before.

A Hunkpapa Lakota, Sitting Bull was born in 1831 near the shores of the Grand River, in what is now South Dakota. Originally named “Jumping Badger”, he did not immediately show warrior credentials and was nicknamed “Slow”.

Sitting Bull proved himself at 14, when, fighting in his first war party, he knocked a Crow warrior from his horse. To honour his bravery, he was named “Buffalo Bull Who Sits Down” (later abbreviated to “Sitting Bull”), symbolising a buffalo sitting steadfastly on its haunches in the face of danger. The description proved apt.

Throughout the 1860s, Sitting Bull fiercely opposed growing encroachment of Sioux land. In July 1864, he helped defend a Teton encampment in the Battle of Killdeer Mountain. In 1865, he led an attack on the newly built Fort Rice in what is now North Dakota.
In 1872, Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse led a large war party in their campaign to block the Northern Pacific Railway’s construction. It is said, Sitting Bull and four other warriors settled in front of the construction path, within firing range. He then smoked his pipe, passed it, cleaned it and casually walked away with his companions, as bullets flew around him.

In 1874, General Custer discovered gold in the Black Hills, a sacred Native American area, protected by the Fort Laramie Treaty. The US Government tabled the treaty and declared war on any who resisted.

All the while, Sitting Bull continued his resistance, amassing more and more Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapaho followers.

Raffin Mathis

Billy the kid's mother died in 1874 of tuberculosis, he spent some time in foster care before being imprisoned for theft of a laundry in 1875,this is the beginning of his bandit life.

Billy continued his bandit life by associating with Jhon Mackie and stealing the soldiers' horses, they were imprisoned but the kid managed to escape.

The date of his first murder remains uncertain but Billy would have committed his first murder on August 17, 1877 because he defended himself, but he is accused of murder so he fled to the new mexico with a stolen horse

It is after this event that he joins the "boys gang" with whom he will attack the flock of a powerful man, Jhon Chisium. The gang then makes one of the presses and they settle in Lincoln County

In 1877, the kid leaves "the boys gang" to become a cowboy, he begins to work for a breeder, Jhon Tunstall. The breeder was shot by sheriff Wiliam Brady in 1878 following a quarrel. His assassination marks the beginning of the Lincoln County War.

Billy and the breeder's men decide to avenge the murder of Jhon Tunstall. The kid was charged with murder and later he was imprisoned again but he escaped again on June 17, 1879.

At the end of his life, the newspapers nicknamed him "Billy the kid", he was at the height of his glory and he had a lot of notoriety but he was captured and sentenced to hang in 1881 for all his crimes.
Once again he managed to escape by getting rid of his chains, so he fled Lincoln County with a stolen horse.

Billy the kid was killed by Garret on July 14, 1881 at Fort Summer, there are rumors that the kid would not have died like that but this is the official version.

Billy the kid is a symbol of the West of America because it symbolizes the opposition to justice, lonely life, independence and survival, it has marked its time and much more thanks to all the writings that make it praise as well as more recently all the movies done in his honor.

Crazy Horse, originally Cha-O-Ha, was born between 1840 and 1845 in South Dakota. He is part of Sioux Lakota. He stood out from his tribe with his fair skin and his brown and curly hair. Crazy Horse and his chief Sitting Bull both have contributed to the historic defeat of General Custer at Little Bighorn which is the Sioux's greatest victory in the Indo-American wars. After witnessing the death of the Conquering Bear by the settlers, the teenager Crazy Horse had visions telling him that he was the protector of his people. In the visions, it is also apparently known that he was not blessed in battle if he dressed modestly. His warrior reputation grew in the 1850s and 60s. He fought enemy tribes such as Crow, Arikara and allied with other tribes against the United States as during the conflict, the Battle of Red Buttes in 1865, for example. His second wife, Nellie Larrabee (Laravie) spied Crazy Horse on behalf of the US Army, and some argue that she played a decisive role in his downfall. He was wounded with a bayonet during a fight with officers. Crazy Horse passed away on September 5, 1877. His father buried him in a secret place

He was, throughout his life, a symbol of Native American fighting against settlers.

Flèche Ilona 1°5

Sitting Bull was born in 1831 near the shores of the Grand River, in what is now South Dakota .His original name is Jumping Badger Sitting Bull proved his worth at the age of 14 when, in his first war fight, he struck a warrior. As a reward for his bravery, he was named "Buffalo Bull Who Sits Down" which will be more steeped in "Sitting Bull", which symbolizes a buffalo sitting firmly on his hips despite the danger

Throughout the 1860s, Sitting Bull fiercely opposed the growing encroachment of Sioux lands. In July 1864, he participated in the defence of a camp during the Battle of Killdeer Mountain. In 1865, he led an attack on Fort Rice, now North Dakota.
In 1865,The American army began to invade the country from Powder River and Red Cloud, Chief Oglala Lakota, led his defense from 1866 to 1868. Sitting Bull played an active role in Red Cloud's War, leading several war parties and organizing guerrilla attacks.

In 1868, Red Cloud signed the Fort Laramie Treaty with the United States, agreeing to live on a reserve. What did not please Sitting Bull was that he decided to defy the treaty and continue the fighting, creating large bands of supporters composed not only of the Sioux, but also of the Cheyenne and Arapaho.

In 1930, the Hunkpapa tribe members interviewed, who survived, claimed that Sitting Bull became "the supreme chief of the entire Sioux nation" in 1869. Later, historians demonstrated that the decentralized nature of the Sioux made this impossible, but they accepted that Sitting Bull inspired intertribal support as never before.

Antoine Puel et Mathias Marty 1°5

Sitting bull was born in 1831 near the banks of the Grand River ( called in present-day Dakota). At the age of 14, he overthrew a Crow warrior. This earned him his nickname of «Buffalo Bull who sits down» and later shortened to «Sitting Bull».This name symbolizes a buffalo standing still in the face of danger.

In the 1860s, he participated in some wars to defend his territory. Sitting Bull led several parties and organized guerrilla attacks during «Red Cloud's War».

A treaty was signed in 1868, Sitting Bull disagreed it and continued to fight with many supporters. Sitting Bull had become “Supreme Chief of the whole Sioux Nation” in 1869.
In 1872, with Crazy Horse, they led a war party to block the construction of the Northern Pacific Railway.

Sitting Bull was seen as a holy man, possessing a gift of prophecy.

In 1881, following the return of the American army, he fled with his people to Canada.

After two years in prison, he joined the Dakota Standing Rock Indian Reserve, touring the Buffalo Bill Wild West show for four months. He thought that this show might improve relations between white men and Amerindians. The Ghost Dance movement appeared, Sitting Bull did not take part in the action but he allowed the dancers to gather in his camp. He was shot and killed with seven other Sioux in 1890 after resisting a police arrest because of this new movement.

Sitting Bull is very important in West America because he is still the most powerful Amerindian in history, and probably the most famous. He fought the white settlers for much of his life. He remains a rallying symbol of hope and rebellion, over the world.
Lara Abouda and Annelies Duhautois 1°5
