Jones

Setting: School, Home, and Bus

Plot: In this book, Junie B. is extremely nervous about attending school and riding the bus for the first time. She manages to successfully finish her first day and bus ride; however, she doesn’t want to ride the bus home because of a rumor that a student told her. As a result, she tries to hide and avoid riding the bus home, but she becomes even more nervous
because she is lost and alone, and in the end, she learns an important lesson about what happens when you try to hide from your problems.

PERSONAL RESPONSE:

This book hit home for me because in kindergarten i had the meanest bus driver. I was so scared to ride by myself for the first week of school. I think this book is awesome for younger children that do have to start doing things on their own. it shows that even though there are scary tasks in this world we can overcome any obstacle.

His parents gave him a pretty name, his room looked like a girl’s room, and he wore clothes that other girls liked wearing. After he realized he was a trans boy, Aidan and his parents fixed the parts of life that didn’t fit anymore, and he settled happily into his new life. hen Mom and Dad announce that they’re going to have another baby, and Aidan wants to do everything he can to make things right for his new sibling from the beginning—from choosing the perfect name to creating a beautiful room to picking out the cutest onesie. With a little help, Aidan comes to understand that mistakes can be fixed with honesty and communication, and that he already knows the most important thing about being a big brother: how to love with his whole self.

Personal Response: With today's society and topics like transgender not being shunned or swept under the rug i think it's so important for children to understand and accept what transgender means. Teaching children at a young age to love and accept yourself for who you are no matter if you're different is the foundation to a happy life.

Jacqueline writes Brown Girl Dreaming as a memoir of her childhood experiences growing up in the north and the south during the 1960's/ 70's. It's a story about family. And it's a story to remind us that we are all dreamers, bringing our own gifts wherever we roam.
Topic: It chronicles Yuyi Morales' journey from Mexico to the United States with her young son, Kelly.

Literary Elements: A mother moves to America to help with a dying relative and to marry. She has a baby and she is amazed by the country, but she has a hard time feeling like she has a place. Until, she finds the public libraries. She has never seen anything like them. She loves the books and uses the color picture books to learn English.

Personal response: The story of a single mother immigrant coming to The United States from Mexico not knowing how to read or speak english. The challenges through the book you can see Yuyi and her son go through. Getting on the train and not being able to read the map, or playing in the parks water fountain and police telling her to get out but she cannot understand what they're saying. The emotions on the characters faces. The detail to why certain pictures are in the book. So much thought went into the illustrations. For me that's where the book shines. The words help tell the story but the emotion you feel from the illustrations when they are in the public library are heartwarming. A chance to learn for free, no judgement, no rush.

It was refreshing to see such an honest depiction of awkward grade school encounters. I wonder what Cece's memoir would be like if she never left Ms. Dorn's class with the other deaf students that she had for classmates. I'd be interested to see how those experiences would contribute to being more outspoken when it comes to dealing with new people that aren't accustomed to having deaf people around them.

All was well until there was an invitation by the prince to attend his ball. Cinderella wound up going to the ball by crying until she manifested a fairy godmother that granted her wish to attend the ball but had to leave before the clock struck midnight. Cinderella leaves behind a shoe and the prince searches for her. Happily ever after.
Visual elements: cartoon visuals from the movie displayed throughout the text with some reimaginings.
Response to the book: This book is really a condensed version of the movie. I enjoyed it, but thought about it differently after reading the Egyptian Cinderella. I wonder what other notable changes can be made to this tale.

The librarian wasn't one to do it but rather another student's mom who had a lot of bearing on the decision because of her connections and money. Mary Anne had the opportunity to speak up about the decision and state her feelings at a board meeting but lose her nerve and didnt speak up at the board, leaving her favorite book still off the shelf and still banned. More books are being banned because the same mom keeps making complaints about the books and the school board agrees and makes the school librarian pull them off the shelves. Amy Anne is furious. She believes no books should be taken off the shelves because they don't like what's inside of them! Heck, half the books they are banning are ones the school board never read but they are scared of the content inside the books. Mary Anne and some of her friends decide that there's only one thing to do to combat the censoring: start an illegal locker library of copies of the banned books donated by her fellow students.

Unfortunately the wolf also had a cold and his sneeze knocked down the first pig’s straw house. The stick house of the second pig did not fair much better as the wolf kept sneezing. The third pig, who lived in a brick house, was just downright rude and insulted the wolf’s granny. This made the wolf so angry that he was banging on the door just as the police drove up. Once the media got hold of the story of the arrested wolf, they blew the whole thing out of proportion. The wolf was framed.
Personal Response: This Book made me laugh out loud. I thought it was a great spin on the traditional fable tale. Especially with media being very popular in todays society i thought it was a great perspective to show the wolfs side.

Author: Christy Jordan-Fenton & Margaret Pokiak-Fenton
Illustrator: Liz Amini-Holes
Publisher, Date: Annick Press, 2010
Page Number: 156
Grade Level: 4-8
Genre: Biography
Summary: This is a story about a young girl who is wanting to go to residential school to learn & read. She is one who loves to read, but once her family gives her wishes to go to the school, it becomes a nightmare all in one.
Personal Response: This book caught me by surprise with where it was leading to. I had some idea with what might happen in the book, but I was not expecting this at all. It hurt me even being the reader, seeing all the pain this young 8 year old went through. All she wanted to do was to read because it was her desire, yet when she went to these schools, tormenting came along with it. It breaks my heart knowing that there are people out there who have gone through similar things, but just keep it buried inside, too scared to bring it to the surface. I am very glad she shared her story to all of us.
