It opposes motion when an object is lifted up or moved around. One type of force i am familiar with is frictional force(friction). Friction helps us to walk without slipping. An example of a surface with more friction is a floor with pebbles design on it and a floor with not as many friction as the pebbled floor is a marble  tile.
