From the beginning of 2016 until February 14, 96 requests for protection have been submitted by foreigners coming mainly from Syria, Pakistan and Iraq.

Romania does not face waves of refugees for two main reasons: is not sufficiently developed to become a destination country for refugees, and is not located on the most preferred transit routes towards the West. On September 9, 2015 the Justice and Home Affairs Council decided that 4,646 refugees will be relocated in Romania from other European countries. According to the decision taken in spring 2015, 1,700 more refugees should be added to this number, so the country will receive around 6,300 asylum seekers.

According to the authorities, in 2015 Romania was running six reception centers for refugees, with a total capacity of 1,500 places. Refugees are offered accommodation and, upon request, a food allowance amounting to RON 10 per day, and an additional RON 6 for other expenses, according to a recent Government Decision.
