Good comprehension depends on three main parts. First, students need strong language skills like vocabulary and clear communication to understand and explain ideas. Second, they must use higher-order thinking skills such as analyzing, inferring, and evaluating, which help them go beyond memorizing and actually make sense of information. Third, they need self-correction strategies, meaning they notice when something doesn’t make sense and fix it—like rereading or asking questions.

In PE/Health, this might look like understanding directions for a new game, figuring out why certain exercises improve fitness, or correcting themselves if they realize they misunderstood a rule. These three components together help students fully understand and apply what they learn.
