Towards Christmas, the children will be reading: Ice Palace by Robert Swindells, using this to inspire:

• Setting descriptions

• Character descriptions

• Similes and Metaphors

Alongside this we will be studying some grammatical features such as:

• fronted adverbials to show where or when something happens

• adding a comma after fronted adverbials

• expanded noun phrases

• Inverted commas (speech marks)

• nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs

In year 3, the children will also begin to learn cursive writing.

To support your child at home, you could :

• Read and perform poetry, focusing on their prosody when reading.

• Looking at descriptions found in stories, can you find any similes or metaphors?

• use BBC Bitesize to explore the grammatical features studied in year 3

• Write short stories, letters to family or friends, book reviews, diary entries etc

• Describe the world around them- building their vocabulary. This will support them when describing settings in stories.

• Practice letter formation at home beginning to join letters together.

The children will also learn how to spell the year 3/4 words outlined in the curriculum.

To support your child at home you could:

• Model sounding out words, breaking them down into smaller chunks to aid spelling for example fan/tas/tic

• Review the graphemes taught using the 'Grapheme Mats' stuck in their homework books.

• Use the spelling and phonics shed to further practice their spellings.

• Read daily, practicing decoding any unknown words.

• Ask your child what French they have learnt and practice this together.

Later in the term, we will begin looking at multiplication and division focusing on our 2, 5, 10, 3, 4 and 8 timetables. The children will look at arrays and other more formal methods to solve multiplication and division beyond the 12 times table.

They will also, develop their scientific enquiry skills, by planning, doing and evaluating a more formal investigation surrounding shadows.

To support your child at home you could...

• Create a sundial at home, tracking how the sun moves throughout the day.

• Look at shadow art performances, could you create your own shadow puppets. Thinking about what materials would be best suited for this (linking to opaque, transparent and translucent).

Throughout the unit we will explore:

• Bronze and Iron age tools and art

• Early settlements such as Skara Brae

• Bronze Age religion, technology and travel, for example, Stonehenge

• making connections, contrasts and trends over time

• exploring and analysing a variety of historical sources

To support your child at home you could:

• Visit museums and archeological sights, discuss how we learn about the past and what these artefacts teach us.

• visit the library, taking out books relating to the unit

• Research each age using the internet, books or by watching documentaries.

• Create powerpoints, information texts, presentations on the stone age.

• make model simple tools using materials from the stone age

• create cave paintings inspired by the stone age

Alongside this, we will be exploring a number of religious festivals throughout the year. If you would like to share your own experiences of any of these religious festivals, please do not hesitate to get in touch! We would love some parent visitors to discuss how and why these festivals are celebrated in our community and different cultures.

To support your child at home you could:

• Share and discuss your own religion and how worship makes you feel.

• Research the above religious festivals and how light is celebrated

• Visit the local church or other religious places of worship.

• Explore other religions and religious festivals, this could be done through stories or research. BBC Bitesize has a selection of videos on various religious festivals.

They will use clay to create pots inspired by the iron age. Finally, they will build model ironage roundhouses using a variety of resources.

To support your child at home:

• Research different artists at home- discussing what you like and dislike about their art.

• Visit galleries

• Use a variety of materials at home to create pieces of art - you may wish to recreate some iron age art.

• use a variety of drawing programmes

• Desktop publishing

• internet safety and the importance of this.

To support you child at home you could:

• Create pieces of art using paint, these could be inspired by our learning across the curriculum.

• Share times when you felt nervous about starting something new.

• Discuss music with you child, which styles of music do they like or dislike and why?

• Use technology to make songs

• practice playing the Glockenspiel at home

• Research different composers the children like or dislike

• Listen to a variety of musical instruments- can they identify them by listening to them?

Towards the end of the term the children will also learn how to spell the year 3/4 words outlined in the curriculum. Once we start teaching these spellings, we will send home a weekly spelling practice.

To support your child at home you could:

• Practice breaking longer words into chunks for example fan/tas/tic.

• Sound out different words counting the sounds in them. Children often drop sounds when spelling as they haven't clearly sounded it out before writing.

• Review the graphemes taught using the 'Grapheme Mats' stuck in their homework books.

• Use the spelling and phonics shed to further practice their spellings.

• Read daily, practicing decoding any unknown words.

• PE is now on Monday's and Thursday's. The children can come to school in their PE kits.

• Swimming will take place in Spring term on Wednesday mornings (more information on this will be given out towards the end of Autumn term).

• Homework will be given out weekly on Fridays.

• As we approach the colder months, please ensure your child is dressed in warm, layered clothing so they can stay comfortable and enjoy outdoor activities during the school day.
