Positive Physical Classroom Climate Strategies
1. Welcoming students as they come into the classroom.
2. Treating peers and teachers with respect.
3. Take care of books and shared stationary.
4. Acknowledging and celebrating diversity in the classroom.
5. Emphasizing group work and collaboration.
6. Student Agency - Involve students in decisions and allow for choice and voice.
7. Develop a classroom agreement.
8. Give specific praise.
9. Provide feedback that is both complimentary and constructive.
10. Stay consistent with norms and expectations

Non-examples                  
1. Don’t give up.

Online Learning Environment

Positive Online Classroom Climate Strategies
1. Greet each student by name.
2. Check into student's emotional well-being.
3. Use visual aids to give relevant examples. 
4. Keep lessons interactive and avoid long explanations or instruction. 
5. For disengaged or struggling students, reach out to families & provide parental/caregiver support. 
6. Smile more, use a pleasant voice, use more gestures.
7. Use extrinsic motivators and rewards like emojis, stars, personal notes, Dojo Points, etc.
8. Establish a virtual classroom expectation agreement.

Non-examples                  
1. Don’t be late to the class. 
2. Don’t turn the camera off.
3. Mute the microphone.
4. Don’t be a bully. 
5. Don’t interrupt others when they are speaking.  
6. Don’t wear your pajamas to class. 
7. Don’t bring distracting things to the online learning area.

1. Establishing a routine and expectations right from the start of the year.
2. Praising and "catching" students doing the right thing when nobody's watching.
3. Sharing core values with your students by defining them and being the example and model. Our school core values are: generosity, integrity, life-long learning, and passion.
4. Applying the expectations across the entire school day and not just during class time. Core values extend to recess and lunchtime. Or really ANY time as a human being.
What doesn't work:
1. Inconsistency (when the teacher does not follow through with expectations).
2. Shaming students by calling them out in front of the entire class...a very real problem in Asia.
3. When you use behavioral vocabulary assuming students understand what you are saying. Behavior must be modeled either by the teacher or through role playing. Or through incidences that may happen in class - using those times as teaching moments rather than punishing moments.
4. We are shaping future citizens of the planet which means students need to understand that core values is something that we carry throughout the day every day in life. Build positive relationships, immediately give feedback, and encourage collaboration in those strategies that can be easily implemented in physical and online classrooms, and would be effective in the environment where they are applied.

Norms Based on What Works

Physical learning environment examples:
1.    Listen to the people and give a respond
2.    Raise my hand to speak
3.    Use respectful Collaboration and communication skills
4.    Always thanks for kind behavious
 
Online learning environment examples:
1.    Build a “check-in” routine
2.    Muting when others are speaking and thumbs up when you agree with your peers
3.    Raise my digital hands to be ready to speak
4.    Utilize breakout groups for small group discussions

Norms Based on What Doesn’t Work

Non-examples in both physical and online environments: 
1.    Extend lecture. (Students would wander out and become more impatient.)
2.    Yell, shout and scream to students to let them calm down. ( If it doesn’t work, the class would lose control.)
3.    Copying much information in the class. ( It does not guarantee thinking. )
4.    Round reading. ( The teacher assigns a part of a text to each student to read. The rest student would chill out. )

1. Consistent use of positive language that is age appropriate.
2. Clear boundaries and expectations, laid out from the beginning of the academic year that are consistent across all classrooms and subjects.
3. Students are involved in the creation of classroom charters that reflect the schools core values.
4. Consistent use of behavior and reward systems in class, following school policies.
5. Celebrating not only academic achievement but also students personal achievements and giving recognition when the students are meeting the schools core values.
6. Ensure positive aspects of students behavior are recognized and shared with parents and other stake holders.

What doesn't work online and in class:
1. Inconsistent use of language and language that isn't age appropriate.
2. Not following through when addressing negative behaviors creating confusion for the students as to what is expected of them.
3. Students not having any ownership over classroom or school rules. Using the classroom charter as a way of shaming students rather than as a positive tool.
4. Inconsistent use of reward systems creating a cultural of perceived favoritism among students that will ultimately lead to a deterioration of behavior across the class.
5. Not being consistent in the expectation of the schools core values. Causing less academic students to become withdrawn and lack confidence if only academic successes are recognized and rewarded.
