He graduated from Johns Hopkins University, University of Michigan. He discovered (1911) the first oncogenic virus (named after him), causing chicken sarcoma. Investigated the role of viruses and carcinogenic substances in the etiology and pathogenesis of tumors. He worked at Rockefeller University.
