However, Faynan was once the epicenter of one of the largest nomadic kingdoms in the history of the entire southern Levant.

Copper is one of the few metals that can occur in nature in a directly usable metallic form (native metals). This led to very early human use in several regions, from c. 8000 BC. Thousands of years later, it was the first metal to be smelted from sulfide ores, c. 5000 BC; the first metal to be cast into a shape in a mold, c. 4000 BC; and the first metal to be purposefully alloyed with another metal, tin, to create bronze, c. 3500 BC.[5]

In the Roman era, copper was mined principally on Cyprus, the origin of the name of the metal, from aes сyprium (metal of Cyprus), later corrupted to сuprum (Latin). Coper (Old English) and copper were derived from this, the later spelling first used around 1530.[6]

Commonly encountered compounds are copper(II) salts, which often impart blue or green colors to such minerals as azurite, malachite, and turquoise, and have been used widely and historically as pigments.

Copper used in buildings, usually for roofing, oxidizes to form a green verdigris (or patina). Copper is sometimes used in decorative art, both in its elemental metal form and in compounds as pigments. Copper compounds are used as bacteriostatic agents, fungicides, and wood preservatives……

Leading national institutions such as Jordanian universities, the Natural Resources Authority, the Supreme Council for Science and Technology, and some national companies play an active role in studying Jordan's mineral wealth. Much of Jordan’s mineral wealth needs to be studied or discovered new ones.

In the ancient world, copper was an incredibly important resource. In some ways, copper in the Iron Age was like oil today, playing a critical role in the daily functioning of life. Copper would ultimately also drive the development of complex society in Faynan.

Copper was used for many purposes, including making jewelry, ritual items, tools, and weapons.

Khirbet al-Nahas is an archaeological site in Jordan, the largest prehistoric copper mining site. Founded in the Chalcolithic Age, founded in 2011, founded in the Chalcolithic Age, and part of the copper mining and smelting sites in the entirety of Feynan Valley. And the civilization of copper in the early Bronze Age, and its mining increased in the Middle and Late Bronze Age, and the ages continued through the Iron, Nabataean, Roman, Byzantine, Crusader, Mamluk and Ottoman periods.

The mine and its ruins are located in the Wadi Feynan region in Wadi Araba, and administratively it belongs to the Tafila governorate.
