One way I can reduce implicit bias is to become more open-minded and educated on people's own stories and personal background. This comes from being able to not 'judge a book by it's cover'. How we look at people and how they present themselves should not be how we continue to perceive them without getting to know them on a personal level or how we judge how successful they can become.

One form in which I can reduce implicit bias is through putting myself in others' shoes and recognizing their perspective. Through this, I can regard their thoughts and how stereotypes and social biases may influence their life. By putting ourselves in individuals' shoes and potentially considering what they face, we can eliminate any form of judgment and negative perceptions we may hold. By understanding others, we can perceive them differently, ultimately creating respectful interactions and relationships. Recognizing and eliminating our implicit biases is crucial as it can have a negative impact not only on our decisions and behaviors but also on every aspect of our social and professional lives.

I can reduce implicit bias by being open-minded and putting myself in the shoes of others. Because implicit biases can often stem from stereotypes and subjective norms, I believe that keeping an open mind can prevent me from subconsciously creating my own judgements. Reducing implicit bias is crucial in a field like Public Health where we aim to serve all individuals within communities, regardless of their age, gender, sexuality, or social class. In order to create a society that is equal to all, we must prevent ourselves from placing judgement onto others based on our perceived notions.

A way to reduce my own implicit bias is by increasing opportunities for contact with individuals from different groups. I've noticed that I tend to be friends with people who are the same ethnicity as me. Growing up in a community that was filled with Asians was also why I had more Asian friends. It was until I went to college which was when I felt like I was in a different space, something that wasn't similar to the community I grew up in. By stepping out of my circle more, I am letting myself learn the different types of culture there are out there.

After taking a social inventory of my friend group I realized that in order for me to really address and deconstruct my implicit bias I need to take the time to be more culturally aware and make friends with individuals of different backgrounds. There is so much strength in having a bicultural group of individuals come together and share their thoughts and experiences. Within the short video, Anurag Gupta states that when meeting with our new friends to ask them, " What breaks your heart"? and "What makes you come alive?" These questions allow us to look past their appearance and differences and begin to see them as a unique individual, who may also share a lot of the same values that we do. Through this acceptance and foundation of understanding our individuality, will we deconstruct implicit bias.

One way in which I can reduce implicit bias is through seeing the person as an individual rather than a stereotype. When caring for a patient in the hospital I need to look them as an individual and understand what type of care they need. Some nurses that I work with will give the common stereotype that "oh that patient is X race and they all want this type of care." I often remind them that health care is tailored to the individual and we need to examen their needs, not the needs as a race.

There are two types of Biases including Conscious and Unconscious bias. In most instances unconscious bias tends to occur more frequently especially in health care. Being in the health care field and watching patient after patient enter the unit I try not to incorporate my biases upon them. For an important reason is I would not like it being done to myself. An important way I can build on reducing bias in myself is practicing more partnership building. Not in a way that I look at them as a low-status person, but to be able to sit down and get to know them. Understanding a patients and actually showing them you care about them, that they are not just another number would help them feel comfortable and cared for. They can see that I am not treating them any different than I would a nurse or doctor but just as a human being.

A way I could lower my own implicit bias would be to use a replacement of stereotypes. Such as when I come to know of any type of response made on a individual or person is stereotyped can actually be adjusted within my own thinking to an adequate (non judgemental/biased) response instead. It will help my mind stay off the so called assumption made and therefore give me a chance to connect with the person and know the truth. By practicing this exercise when in situations for stereotypical incidence, this will provide proper avoidance responses due to not lingering on biased comments.

These practices will hopefully help to reduce the likelihood of stereotypes and irrational conclusions from occurring in my head. I would like to sit back and observe more because there is often a lot of information that you may not be aware of when meeting people for the first time.

Implicit bias happens when individuals unconsciously judge others based on the racial group that they belong to. Implicit bias often is associated with negative stereotypes and prejudices. One way to reduce my own implicit bias is to be courteous and respectful of other cultures and backgrounds. There are many different cultures and religions in the world which should be celebrated, instead of judging an individual based on what they look like or believe in. The world is a very diverse place where there are many different racial groups with their own traditions. Individuals should learn to be more culturally aware, instead of perceiving others based on their racial group and stereotypes. Building respect and trust between individuals is important to avoid any unnecessary conflict or misunderstanding.

Implicit bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our actions in an unconscious manner. These biases can include both favorable and unfavorable assessments and are activated involuntarily, without an individual’s intentional control. Firstly, we must acknowledge that everyone has implicit bias. Secondly, we must evaluate our own lives to determine how we developed these biases. Lastly, we must dispel these biases when we see people acting on them, especially in school or in the workplace. In my opinion, I would describe implicit bias as the natural biases we have whether they be positive or negative towards different people or situations and how they act on these biases in their daily lives. One way for me to reduce my own implicit bias would include being more open-minded and putting myself in other people’s situation. Sometimes we often look at others and question their decisions about the choices that they make, but we often forget to realize that not everyone is able to do what we are capable of doing. Instead of judging others right off the bat, we need to sympathize and put ourselves in their shoes to gain a better understanding of what they are going through.

Also, not to mention from the video, "What Is Bias, and What Can Medical Professionals Do to Address It?", it mentions that we can take a quiz to see how biased we are. One way I would reduce my implicit bias would be by changing my perspective of another individual and trying to see how they would see a situation or if I were them in that case. Also, accept everyone as they are as individuals and humans rather than based on the individuals culture. Being open to talk to many people can help reduce bias as well by approaching them and listening to what they say with no judgement.

One way that I can reduce my own implicit biases is through individuation which means seeing the person for who they are without attaching a stereotype to that person. I believe this would help me be more open-minded and avoid grouping people together. This will make one focuses on the things that make people individuals instead of seeing them for their race or a stereotype about them.

To begin with, implicit bias means to have certain attitudes towards a certain group of people and unconsciously stereotype them. In order to reduce implicit bias everyone should be open to understanding one's own biases. It is important to become aware of own biases and address them. It is so important for medical health professionals to acknowledge the unconscious stereotypes they have towards certain groups of people. This can be achieved by learning and accepting people of all cultures and background. I can reduce my own implicit bias by being more open minded and self educating myself on other peoples cultures. I also can take the Implicit Association Test (IAT) that will show my implicit attitudes. I believe that this will help me see what unconscious implicit biases I have and need to be worked on.

One way I can reduce my own implicit bias is by using the strategy of counter-stereotypic imaging . By imagining people as the opposite of the stereotype it can truly help me get to know a person without any automatic assumptions or judgments. This can strengthen my communication skills especially in my workplace since I'm a bridal consultant. I meet so many people every week and when providing customer service it is essential to genuinely get to know your customer in order to better assist them. Trying to suppress those stereotypes in our minds from the very beginning of meeting someone is most important because that will build a strong foundation in any person to person relationship.

One way that I can reduce my own implicit bias is to ask more about the background of others. I should start trying to go through life using different lenses. Knowing someone's background will help me do this because then I think, "okay, how would so-and-so go about an issue like this? What would he think?" Using different lenses like this will allow me to keep an open mind and be flexible so that later, as a professional, I will be more flexible and will be better at helping people.

In order to reduce implicit bias, individuals need to be more open-minded and willing to educate themselves. For example, I tend to struggle with understanding other people's side of the story. When I become angry or upset, I don't ever think of what the other person could be going through in their home life. One way I plan to reduce my own implicit biases is to not respond so quickly to other peoples remarks, because they may have other hardships going on in their life.

By being open minded and recognizing that people have different backgrounds. Their way of thinking may be different to my own due to how they grew up or their culture. Being more open minded to what others have to say allows me to put myself in that person's shoes and help redirect my own beliefs or thoughts. Educating myself on other people's cultures and knowing the importance's of those cultures is important too. As that way I can respect the aspects of their culture that may be unknown or different to me.

I do not like to criticize new people or jump to assumptions, because I put them in a box to think of them on a certain way - not the best thing to do. I often try to know more about a person, which helps me understand more about their personality and behaviors. This helps me understand more about them, and tor not think of them the way others would based off their physique.

Implicit bias is a fairly common action, unfortunately it happens often. One way that I can help reduce implicit bias is by being an empathetic listener. I need to place myself in their shoes, I have to be able to hear what they hear, see what they see and feel what they feel. Being able to be empathetic towards people’s situation will help me better understand their barriers and struggles. We never truly know what is going on in people's lives. We must treat everyone with respect, by viewing life through their eyes we can avoid judgment without knowing. Overall, it is important to keep an open mind and try to be the best version of ourselves.
- Patricia Penaloza

Since I will be hopefully be working in the medical field I will look at spiritual/ hollitic healings that that specific culture may take part in. I will also look at any home remedies and learn about how they are done. For example, I have learned that in the Mexican culture there is this “cleansing” that people do. Where they drink a specific mixture and they get their belly rubbed and their back skin is pulled. That is done in hopes to allow be stomach ache. As somos one looking in, I would see this as weird or strange but this is something that people actually do and believe it works. I would do my best to learn more stuff like this.

I think people get caught up in stereotypes and it allows them to be ignorant to the facts or potentially how someone really is. I think communicating and listening is a good way to reduce the bias and showing empathy for people. I also think that showing respect to one another can go a long way because you would obviously want to feel respected so you should the same for others. I also think advocating and helping others with the bias is one thing you can do to help each other achieve the common goal of reducing implicit biases. Especially during times like this we need to support each other and show solidarity to help each other get out of the struggles in life.

One way to reduce implicit bias is to expand your worldview. Remember to be open-minded because that is how you become culturally competent in the medical field. For me, I have been travelling and learning about the different cultures there. It always comes as a culture shock, but I learn and understand them as unique differences. Another way to reduce implicit bias is to surround yourself with a diverse group of people and engage with them. For example, make friends with people of different ethnic backgrounds and you can learn about the way they host a party or how their household looks.

Reducing Implicit bias is to learn that I also have bias and I do stereotype and have views based on how I grew up and so with becoming self aware, can help. Implicit bias is being able to self acknowledge and to teach our families and friends of their own bias and raise awareness within our families. This will help reduce bias overall in our generations and pass this on to future generations to come.
