Brandon Chong Zhen Ming (U1440531A),Tang Kiat Min (U1440675E)

as Singapore is a very small country, anything that can be spread such as seeds outside the recommended area will have dire consequences due to the fact that Singapore is highly densely populated. if it would cause side effect on humans it will be bad, hence to regulate GMO first it need to be put in an isolated area such as island or a clean room to minimize the risk of contamination. not only that, testing must be done periodically to make sure GMO post no harm to the consumer and the environment. also all product that is GMO be it for local or for export should be labelled and what ever things that are done should be transparent and be accounted for. public should also be educated about GMO about the risk and cons, and for any major choice there should at minimum seek public opinion and at best hold a referendum.

Constantly, review companies producing GM food to curb any possible dangers that could arise from GM food production such as transfer of GM gene to other corps (environment).
4. Companies should clearly define their process for making GM food and state what is added to make GM food.

Firstly, we have to determine whose responsibility it is to regulate GM foods. The government setting these regulations as an over-arching paternalistic state would not be sufficient without the public's stake and educated interest.

Instead of focusing on whether these regulations are meted out strictly or loosely, we believe that transparency should be placed at the forefront of any regulation, so to best inform the public on their purchase decisions.

What we suggest is to do is to consumer-friendly database which is compiled collaboratively by the scientists and the government.

Currently, GMOs are not yet regulated. However, we propose these solutions:
1. Understudy the existing legal framework from established organisation in Europe. E.g. Similar procedures with same standards that are transparent and efficient.

2. Education and awareness of GMOs risks and benefits

3. Create stringent approvals and criteria for entry and labelling of GMOs. Follow the international standards.

4. Enforce a system to evaluate, track/trace the different GMOs products in the market. Create a quality plan and designate a body specifically for that, e.g. GMAC.

5. Set up regulations of planting, importation to prevent spreading to WT.

For Singapore to pubch above its weight Singapore needs to encourage entrepreneurship and Pioneer in pushing forward biotechnology. As such, Singapore should have regulations but loose regulations which enables scientist to explore freely but resposibly
1. By regulating the process of creating GMOs, we can ensure that what we are feeding our people is safe for them.
2. The regulations should follow USA or European Lawmakers
3. Since most of Singapore food is imported from other countries, it could mean that our food already have GM-food components, hence it is important to check that our imports of GM are safe for consumptions and our Scientists should be involved in checking and testing the GMO.

4. Isolate and contain lab and resources to avoid spreading of GMO until everything is proven to be safe

5. Set up a specific governing body that have a expertise in this skills

6. Monitor process of creating GMO

There is a need to constantly reassess the risks in the increasing variety of different GMO food. With Singaporeans being “kiasu”, they would be more doubtful of their food choices and also health. GMO food prices should be regulated against local home-grown food, thereafter, citizens in Singapore can adopt a healthier life-style alongside the government's endorsement of a healthy Singapore.

With greater biotechnology being constantly upgraded, there is a need for the local government in Singapore to closely monitor international developments and be updated with the biotech industry. Thus, a need to craft greater guidelines.

Scientists should be more involved in the GMO industry to ensure safe consumptions at all times.

Regulations:

Conduct more biotechnological research and safety checks on GM food to ensure that food safety is certain at all times.

Educate citizens on the health risk/potential of GM food.

Limit GM food with higher pesticides and herbicides used i.e. promoting more of GM food with less chemicals utilised

Separate supermarket sections to GM v.s.
