If the topic we want to discuss isn't really important, we will wait until the show or movie is on commercial to discuss. If the topic we want to discuss is important or it catches everyone attention, we will mute or turn off the TV and talk instead. Also, if we are in a social gathering, the TV is mostly never on and if it is most people pay no attention to it.
-Stephanie Covarrubias Perez

I'd say that this is true for my family early on in life because I watched television a lot, and I would use technology more than I would talk to my family. For example, I would watch videos on YouTube in my room for hours before leaving my room to eat. In my opinion it is very easy to get hooked on something quick as a child.

In this statement Goodman claims that frustration caused by technology is based within true concern. It is implicitly stated in this quote that families feel ignored by one another because they are being ignored. Relationships are put under immense strain when the effects of time spent on technology are visible to all those in the family. There are instances within my own family relating to my younger relatives in which they feel ignored by older relatives on the basis of time due to technology. The youngests will get handed technologies when they wish to have time shared instead. So, in my opinion Ellens statement is valid within the fact that I have seen such instances played out within my own life.

Although we do take time out of our day to either watch TV or be on our phones, we have moments in where we are present with each other. For example, in my family, we all eat dinner together and have strict phone rules. We make sure to take this time to communicate with each other. Ellen Goodman´s quote is different for every one. It depends on the family.

In Primal Screen, Goodman claims, "The average kid develops that distant, slack-jawed, hypnotic, hooked stare because he or she IS hooked." I agree with this statement and I think it's true for a lot of little kids these days, personally for my little brother as well. Usually when the parents are busy, they toss the iPad at their face with really no restrictions and they're free to use the internet, and we all know what's on there. They're on them for hours watching endless entertainment, it's pretty much a TV but you can take it anywhere. At the same time, I'm not against technology, but the screen shouldn't take on the role of a parent, thus you should spend quality time in person instead of on the screen.

I both agree and disagree with this statement. In my experience, yes the average kid spends a lot of time on technology. However, it's not because they're "hooked," it's because what other choice do we have? We can go out and get fresh air, yes, but beyond certain activities everything is moving to and relying on technology. Distance learning is hours and hours of work on one computer, and we aren't in control of that. When looking for a job, experience with technology is crucial. As we move on in life, more and more things move to the internet. Personally, I'd rather interact more with the world around me, but I have so little time and freedom that the only thing around me is technology. So, yes the average kid develops a distant stare, but not necessarily because we are hooked.
