I once was working on a dynamic math lesson with my second grade class and our butterfly (from Science) started to emerge. I hesitated and checked with my mentor before allowing students to enjoy the butterfly emerging because I thought my job was to follow the lessons exactly as written. My advice: Teaching can be messy work. When there is a teachable moment, follow it. We don't want to go too far off-track, but there is nothing comparable in the world to seeing new life.

There will be so much to do and learn. Your head will be spinning. That is normal. Everyone else's head is spinning too and they have been teaching for a while. So, let things go. You can't get it all done. Just remember why you are there, to help students learn and let that guide you in setting priorities. Also don't reinvent the wheel. Ask others to share and do the same.

You will be okay if you do not get to everything that you planned. It is better to have more planned than not enough. It is a learning experience all of the time. Each day will be different and you will learn more about your students throughout this process.

It is okay not get to everything you have planned. Things happen throughout the day that you simply cannot plan for and that is okay. Take a deep breath and incorporate what you did not get to in the next days lesson. You will make mistakes, but this is an important lesson for you and the students to learn. It is okay to tell the students you made a mistake and show them how to learn from those mistakes.

Never stop trying new ideas that you have. Some will be great, others will fail. Either way, you will learn something from the experience to make it better next time! Remember to show the students you are a real person, too. This is so important in connecting with your class and developing your class culture of students who are comfortable and willing to take risks.
